F-8 FOOD NEWS the Cincinnati ENQUiRERwednesday, July 30, 1980 Fresh Woodruff Sweet Addition To Any Garden food facts KNIGHT NEWS SERVICE Eating watermelon doesn't have to be a messy chore. After you slice off a wedge and remove the seeds, cut inch-wide sections down to the rind. The individual sections will separate as you bend the rind There's nothing so good as a perfect ly ripened tomato. But contrary to popular theory, place tomatoes stem-side up and out of direct sunlight to ripen them properly. For best flavor, serve them at room temperature.

For a really cheap, low-calorie summer refresher, stack up some ice cubes In a glass of water and add a slice of lemon or lime, or both. I ami a sale. BY MARIE RYCKMAN Food Editor To Bella Kalter, there Is nothing sweeter than the woodruff growing In her garden in Lenox Lane. She points out, "This Is a little-known herb here, but I think It is one everyone should get to know. It is zesty, hardy and helpful.

And it's easy to grow. It seems to help itself." Kalter, who grew up in a small town in Northern Canada, explains modestly, "I'm not really much of a gardener, but I do love to see things grow. I have tried to grow gooseberry and currant bushes, like the wonderul ones I remember in Canada, but I haven't had too much luck. I do better with my few raspberry bushes, plum tree and some tomatoes. I really don't have the space or energy to be a true gardener, but, for my own pleasure, I do grow some lunarla and achil-lea, which, when picked and dried take on a beauty different from their fresh beauty.

"Four or five years ago, a friend gave me several sprigs of sweet woodruff to plant in my garden," said Kalter. "It has spread In a beautiful ground cover in the shade where very little else would grow. It remains green from early spring until It is nipped by frost in the winter. In May, the green Is hidden by a profusion of tiny white blossoms that look like a light sprinkling of snow. "THIS IS an herb that can be multiplied by root division," explained Kalter.

"Each plant is dug up In the spring and Its roots untangled so the whole clump can be cut into smaller clumps. Then, each clump, replanted, becomes a fresh new plant." Kalter describes woodruff as "An herb so sweet, It Is somewhat limited to use as flavoring for candles, wines and punches. "When the woodruff is in blossom, the rest of the plant Is a tender, pale green, and, at this time, Mama's niprnoies. She says the herb does wonders for wines and punches and helps fight moths. sprigs of it enhance light wines and punches, said Kalter. "Later in the summer, I dry some of the woodruff and, with this, add an interesting taste SUMMER MRS. PAUL'S REMEMBERS MAMA'S to alcoholic and non-alcoholic punches, said Kalter.
