Then Switzerland's Heinz Guen-thardt ranked No. 50 on the world ATP listings-defeated young Hungarian Zoltan Kuharsky, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Argentines managed to hold a service late in the second set. McEnroe was menacing at the net, smashing repeated shots between the two Argentines. Both he and Fleming held their serves throughout the match. The Argentines took a 2-1 lead in the third set, but lost it when a series of McEnroe's smashes from the net broke Cano's service. The Americans went ahead, 3-2, and held their lead to the end.

Clecc's marathon singles victory was a stunning upset for McEnroe and placed the United States under the threat of elimination from the tourney. Vilas Argentina's top player, gave his country a 1-0 lead Friday by beating Gottfried, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. U.S. coach Tony Trabert conceded ttjat the United States never has been down 2-0 and come back to win. "We aren't giving up," he added.

"We'll take one match at a time." McEnroe, apparently bewildered Friday by the slow clay surface, came back Saturday to give Clerc, Argentina's second-ranked player, an even match. The American scored more with his strong serve, but Clerc forced him to run more after harder and better placed volleys. The two players broke each others' service twice early in the decisive set and were 4-4 when McEnroe broke Clerc in a game that went to deuce eight times. But he blew his chance to win by losing the next game. The match lasted a total of 6W hours, one of the longest in Davis Cup history. 'Clerc's victory, and that of Guill-ermo Vilas over Brian Gottfried the day- before, enabled Argentine coach Lito Alvarez to rest both players for today's decisive singles round in the best-of-5 American Zone final playoffs.

In doing so, he virtually conceded the doubles contest to the Americans, who routed Argentine substitutes Rlcardo Cano and Carlos Gattlker, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4, in 1 hour and 22 minutes.
