In Canton, I photographed a window display showing Generalissimo Chaing Kai-shek, portrayed as old-and bedraggled, trying to board a battered "United States warship" in the face of a vast mainland invasion. It was gone when I returned to the city a few week's later.

Reminders Occasional Propaganda, which until the start of the Geneva talks filled every newspaper and billboard in China, now has died down to an occasional reminder that "China is determined to liberate Taiwan." Newspapers still contain, articles on why China should liberate Formosa because, they say, "Formosa is China's." Tliese hewspape'r reports, however, are not nearly so out of Shanghai's 6,000,000 population. If this average applied to the rest of China, the Communist army would have increased by one million within a few months. frequent as they once were. Indoctrination lessons in Red China have turned more and more to internal subjects instead of fill- Ing school children and workers with "hatred- for traitor Chaing." I asked both Chinese and Europeans in Canton, Peiping, Hankow and Shanghai for locations of ''Liberate Taiwan" posters so I could photograph them. The only one I could find were pie "disappearing" display in Canton and a large map of Formosa In a Peiping park.

Many Rumors Heard Rumors, sweeping China a. few months ago, that negotiations with Chiang might settle the Formosa question, are still discussed and revived among the Europeans in China. Some rumors even said that Chaing was coming back to retire to an old home near Shanghai, while Mme. Chaing was to go off to America. Old Shanghai hands laughed off the idea that Cockney Morris "two- gun" Cohen, former bodyguard of Dr.

Sun Yat-sen, had come to China as Chaing's peace-seeking envoy. Cohen toured China in January and February as the guest of the Communist. But general opinion among Europeans who knew him in the old days and met him again was that no one would make the colorful 67-year-old roughneck an envoy. Some of the rapidly diminishing European set in Shanghai who entertained Cohen in late January gathered he was merely on a pleasure trip.to his old haunts. (When Cohen arrived in Hong Kong from the Red China mainland, he labeled as "damn lies" the rumors that he was in Red China on-official business.) Believe Overtures Real Europeans who know and closely study Communist moves, however, believe overtures of Chiang are genuine.

"peace" to They say that Red China, Intent on building up Industry and trade, does not want war and is prepared to wait for a peaceful settlement over Formosa. Communist leaders are appealing continually to the Nationalists over Radio Peiping to come back to the mainland where "all will be In Peiping I repeatedly requested interviews with army officials over the 'Formosa question. Then you haven't lived man! And you havent's seen Elvis Presley, the jumpin'-jive truck driver from Memphis, Tenn. Elvis, a 21-year-old combination Johnnie Ray and Marlon Brando, has teen-agers swooning in their chocolate sodas and the older fry yodeling in their beer. Even Elvis, a self-confessed raw country boy and guitar-playin' fool, doesn't quite dig this fabulous newfound success. Truck Driver, Usher Just two years ago, Elvis was driving; a truck for $35 a week and a few years before that he was knocking down $14 a week as a theater usher.

Then one day his pa gave him a guitar and although he didn't know B-flat from C-sharp, Elvis learned to play gosh-darned thing. "I didn't copy my style from anybody," he drawled. "I got nothin' in common with Johnnie Ray, except we both you wanna call it I jutnped around 'cause it's the way I feel. My stuff's got a beat an 1 'I just can't listen to it an' stand still!" The Presley career really got under way when he hied himself down to a record shop and made an amateur recording of "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin." Man Finally Calls "I made the record for my mother," Elvis said, "but some man in there heard me and said he might call me sometime. He a year-and-a-half later.

He was Sam Phillips, the owner of a record company." Elvis made a couple of recordings for Sam and this into a job with a CBS network radio show, a recording contract with RCA Victor and guest spots on several nationwide television shows. This week he was called out to Hollywood by Producer Hal Wallis to test for a straight acting role in a movie and to guest star on the Milton Berle show. Elvis, although he chalked up $55,000 last year 1 I got almost that much already this is still in a state of shock. "I haven't woke up yet," he admitted. When Elvis Isn't doing radio or TV he's out barnstorming-across kickin 1 bouncin', yellin' and drivin' the customers wi-uld.

His earnings from these chores include around 10,000 fan letters a week from fanatic admirers. No Girl Yet Elvis, a dark-haired Brando- type, around his Holly wood hotel room while he gave out with a run-down on Presley and company and admitted that his favorite sport Is motorcycvle riding and his favorite singers include the Ink Spots and the Four Aces "No," he insisted, "I'm not married or engaged. Workmen have begun clearing the area for a big Long Island shopping center. The field was used until five years ago. tturftuttd ky tattnirtfwwJ HOLLYWOOD, March these days makes Audrey Hepburn happy, and you can't wonder, with life as exciting as it is for her. Kurt Frings has just signed Audrey and Mel Ferrer for an hour and a half long TV spectacular for NBC. Audrey and Mel will be starred in the beautiful love story, in color, with Anatole Litvak directing.

Neither wanted to do the show without Anatole, who directed the original "Mayerling," so he is already working on the script in Paris and will fly here to direct the show. I have no Idea what Audrey and Mel will be paid for doing this stint, but you can guess it will be one of the largest amounts ever paid for a TV spectacular. With "Golden Boy" out the window for Mario Lanza at Columbia, his next will be "The Golden Voice" which Mario and his favorite director Tony Mann will make on their own. I was interested to hear thai "The Golden Voice" is an original based on'xMario's life. If they tel' "all" it should have some dramatic moments.

I'assume this picture will be perhaps fi nanced by Warners. Lanza was ar happy as a lark working for Jack Warner while making "Serenade." Many scenes for "Golden Voice" will be filmed in South Philadelphia, Mario's home town.
