However, Barrios' kick sailed low into the left side of the line. Purdue corner-back Alex was one of several players who appeared to get a hand on the ball. The Badgers repced the Purdue 49 with jjst over one minute to play, but the drive stalled when four successive passes by sophomore Gregg Bohlig sll incomplete. Bohlig's last pass was tipped at tha line cf scrimmage and fell outcf the grasp of receiver Rodney Rhodes.

The University Kentucky christened a new football coach and dedicated Commonwealth Stadium with a victory Saturday afternoon. But, the 1 a and many of the estimated 48,000 flans were a little glum when it was over; they nearly folded beneath a 31-6 lead. They won, 31-26, over Virginia Tech. "A win is a win," said UK Coach, Fran Curci in his opening statement in the press box after he had hurriedly pursued his team to its dressing quarters a few blocks down the road. "You'd have thought we lost to see our players after the game," said Curci.

"I told them, You guys have to learn how to win. Enjoy it. You can always remember 50 years from now and know you played on the team that won its first game in thfs new That's fine, coach, but what about the reversal of form from a yardage-eating, cohesive unit in the first 30 minutes tc a desperate, disorganized group in the second half "I'll take the blame for the flip-flop," volunteered Curci, who called all the plays from the sidelines. Curci was so confident of victory at half time that he suggested to his team it could win in a lark. "I told them to go out and have fun and we used a lot of younger people to give everybody a chance to play." Diminutive quarterback Ernie Lewis, a 5-f oot-9 sprint-out type who wen the starting nod In the last week of training, took Curci at his word.

Lewis and sophomore Sonny Collins, considered the finest back in a long while at UK, were brilliant in the explosive first half as UK scored five of the last six times it had the ball. At halftdme, the fans were discussing how much better the Wildcats looked Polyester Cord General POIY-JET under Curci than under his predecessor, John Ray, whom they thought was too defensive minded. They then, sat back and waited for a slaughter. Instead, it looked like the same old Kentucky at home. "Three downs and a punt," shrugged Curci, an easy analysis.

Add to this some mjscues: two fumbles and a blocked punt kept the Gobblers alie and UK dormant. VPI quarterback Rick Popp finally began finding form, mixed up his plays and UK, and riddled the Wildcats' defensive secondary. "Going into the game we feared their finesse passing," admitted Curci. The blocked punt gave VPI the ball on UK's 25, and, this time, Popp made no mistakes, guiding the Gobblers to a score that was capped by his looping nine yard TD pass. So, with 1:45 left In the third period, UK led, 31-12, and Curci, wearing a blue golf cap, kicked the air and started worrying All the "Mite-y Magi-clan" had.

to do ws check his little protege's statistics. Lewis, in the first half, made 90 yards on 10 rushes, yet when the game ended, he would have 83 net yards on 20 tries. "The first half cur line was blowing them out, then we pulled back," said Curd of the tale of two halves. VPI got even belter in the last period and UK worse, but still hoppf ul. "Will Chester Hager please report to the coroner's office," blared a pub- Whatever your tire needs, the wide, smooth riding 4-ply polyester cord POLY-JET is an outstanding buy! lie address announcement during the tense fourth period; "Yeah, UK's offense died," came a fan's reply, easing the situation around him but not on the field.

Promptly, then, Popp swished a 37-yard scoring aerial to a fine leceiver, Billy Hardee, and Curci was without humor now. That made it, the point after, 31-19. 'I could see it in our players. They thought 'Oh, no, we're going to blow It's happened here in other years. They have to leamn how to be winners," Curci said.

The 'Cats may have in those final minutes or after the Gobblers drew within five points with 5:25 re-nxadnlng. Barry Barber ran five yards untouched for the last score. In those final five minutes, something food happened to UK football: the Cats made one or two big plays on offense and defense (most noteworthy a Lewis rollout run for three yands on a third-down and three situation) and drew the measure of victory, rare commodity In these parts. Even a projected mammoth traffic jam failed to develop, which made Curci a prophet. "Look at them move those cars out of there.

See, I told you it wouldn't be a pioblem," Curci told someone. VIRGINIA TECH 0 4 6 l-26 KENTUCKY 17 0 031 Kentucky Barga 6 from lwi (Steele kick). Kentucky Collins 7 run (Stasis kick). Kentucky fkld Goal Steele 30. Virqlnis Tech Ariani 1 run (run failed).
