Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Wednesday, January 2, 1985 Page 17 Sports Big 10 Basketball Race Should Be Wide Open Sports Scoreboard United Press Interna tionaJ The preliminaries are over and if the pre- conference schedule was any indication, the Big Ten basketball race may be more wide open than many thought. The Big Ten posted an 85-20 mark in non- conference play to date for a winning percentage over 80 percent. Big Ten action gets under way tonight with a top attraction: Indiana at Michigan. The Hoosiers, under Coach Bobby Knight, were rated along with Illinois as the teams to beat in the league at the start of the 1984-85 season. But Michigan may have been the most impressive team in the league, vaulting into the top 20 with a 8-1 record.

The Wolverines had won eight straight before losing at Tennessee last Saturday. "Our foul trouble really hurt us," said Michigan Coach Bill Freider. "We got a lot of fouls (26 to 13) but a lot of those won't be called in the Big Ten. They let you play a little more aggressively." Indiana shook off upset loses to Louisville and Notre Dame to enter the league with a 8-2 mark. The Hoosiers got strong play from 7-foot-2 center Uwe Blab and last year's freshman of the year, Steve Alford.

Indiana won both of its own tourneys in December including last weekend's Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis. Michigan posted an impressive non-conference record in the conference. The Wolverines boast sophomore Antoine Joubert and center Roy Tarpley. Last year, Michigan beat Indiana at home but lost by 15 points at Bloomington. The Wolverines went on to win the NIT.

Illinois, despite two upsets to Alabama- Birmingham and Loyola of Chicago, is still rated as the favorite to repeat as league champion after sharing the crown with Purdue one year ago. Illinois will open the conference season at Minnesota. Purdue, which defeated Wake Forest, Kentucky and South Carolina in December, will visit Iowa while Ohio State travels to Michigan State in Thursday's other Big Ten games. Saturday, Northwestern and Wisconsin, the surprise team in the conference with a 9-1 ledger, debut in the conference meeting in Evanston. Other games Saturday find Illinois at Iowa, Purdue visiting Minnesota, Indiana at Michigan State and Ohio State on the road at Michigan.

Illinois has had 12 days to rest up after being upset 63-62 to Loyola. "No question this is the best and deepest team we've ever had at Illinois," said Illini Coach Lou Henson. "Our goals have been set accordingly." The goal is to get to the Final Four and win the Big Ten. Minnesota was an easy mark for the Illini last year with the Gophers being trounced by 27 at Champaign and by 12 in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers have the backcourt tandem of Tommy Davis and Marc Wilson but may have trouble trying to contain Illinois' muscular frontline.

Iowa wasn't seriously challenged in the preseason and lost at home to Iowa State and in last week's Rainbow Classic to Maryland. But the Hawks did defeat Arkansas in Hawaii. The Hawkeyes also team up two strong inside players in Greg Stokes and Michael Payne. Purdue caught the Big Ten by surprise last year, tying Illinois for the league title with a 15-3 mark. Like last year, the Boilermakers are picked for a middle division finish.

But Purdue beat Iowa in back-to-back games last year including a 21-point decision at Mackey Arena. Michigan State enters competition 9-1. Unlike last year, when the Spartans were overwhelming picks to capture the Big Ten honors, there are still some questions about the strength of Coach Jud Heathcote'steam. The Spartans do have strength in the backcourt with veterans Scott Skiles and Sam Vincent. Ohio State, which beat MSU by 16 and 14 points one year ago, has its entire starting team back except for leading scorer Tony Campbell.

The Buckeyes were 15-14 one year ago. Wisconsin is off to its best start in six years and has already exceeded last year's victory output. The Badgers defeated Northwestern twice last year. The Wildcats, the lone Big Ten club with a sub. 500 mark at 4-6, nearly upset DePaul at the Rosemont Horizon late last month and will be looking to improve on last year's 5-13 league mark.

Only Wisconsin at 4-14 had a worse record than Northwestern in 1983-84. Pacers Top Utah Jazz SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) Indiana Pacers Coach George Irvine wants his team to play five-man ball rather than relying on one or two stars, and Monday night his players used the team concept in the second half to beat Utah, 119-117. The Pacers won after a dramatic comeback in the fourth- quarter Wednesday, with Clark Kellogg hitting two free throws with just 18 seconds remaining to seal the victory. The Jazz had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds, but Adrian Dantley missed a shot with three seconds to go and Steve Stipanovich grabbed the rebound. The Pacers overcame a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win the game, just their ninth victory of the season but their second over the Jazz.

Stipanovich scored 14 points in the final quarter, going five-for- five from the field and four-for- four from the free-throw line, to finish with 22 points and join Kellogg and Herb Williams with 24 points each as the scoring leaders. "I was open in the fourth where I wasn't earlier," Stipanovich said of his sparkling final quarter. "We were able to play well down the stretch and make the plays we needed. The team is gaining confidence and maturity with every game. "I thought that was a great game," said Irvine.
