Title World champion Rosalynn Sumners had to fight off Tiffany Chin instead of Elaine Zayak to win her third straight women's title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships at Salt Lake City. Chin, who had the best scores on the final freestyle program despite a bobble on one triple jump, fin-' ished second overall and Sumners' archrival, Zayak, was third. Chin, 16, of Toluca Lake, and Zayak, 18, of Paramus, N.J., both were chosen to join Sumners, 19, of Edmonds, on the U.S. Olympic squad.

All the women skated a flawed final program. PGA Rookie Leads Phoenix Open Corey Pavin, the leader by one stroke through three rounds of the $400,000 Phoenix Open golf tournament, is a rookie on the American PGA tour but takes a year of globe-trotting experience into today's final 18 holes. Pavin said the experience he gained in Europe and South Africa last year after he'd failed in his first attempt to gain his American tour playing rights was helpful. He won three times, including the South African PGA and the German Open. "It was a year ago this week that I Arnold Palmer's eight-stroke lead melted to a two-shot advantage, after a third-round 79 in the 45th PGA Seniors Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Palmer, calling it "one of my worst rounds," had a round on the PGA National Champion Course.

The 54-year-old Penn-sylvanian shot a sizzling 63 Friday. Along with Allen, the Cardinals are believed to be close to signing first baseman George Hendrick to a five-year contract worth about $1 million a year and outfielder Lonnie Smith to a one-year contract in the range of $725,000, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in today's editions.
