Berra met with Nettles to inform him of the platoon plan when the Yankees' captain arrived in the team's training camp Wednesday.

1 "I don't like it," the 39-year-old, left-handed hitting Nettles said. "I told him so. I think I proved last year that I am an everyday player. I didn't re-sign to become a platoon player. It's a slap In the face, a stab in the back.

Steinbrenner, meanwhile, PITTSBURGH PIRATES: In the past 25 years, only Roberto Cle-mente and Dave Parker have held the Pittsburgh Pirates' right field job for more than a few weeks. Now, Doug Frobel would like to become the third player on that list. That's one reason why Frobel, the heir apparent to Parker, already has been working out for two weeks at the team's spring training camp. "I know I'm going to get a fair shot at a (starting) job this season," said Frobel, the most consistent power hitter in the Pirates' organization. "I think I'll be starting the season playing against right-handers for sure.

After that, I hope the season will take care of itself." Frobel has hit 52 home runs in his last two seasons. reacting to criticism by slugging outfielder Dave Winfield, says he does not like being blamed for the loss of free agent relief pitcher Rich Gossage. "I'm tired of taking the bum rap on Goose Gossage," Steinbrenner told the New York Dally News. "I really resent being hung for this. Do you think I wanted to lose him?" Gossage, the hard-throwing mainstay of the Yankee bullpen from 1978 through last season, signed a five-year, contract with San Diego after opting for baseball's re-entry draft.

The Yankees retained negotiating rights for Gossage, but the pitcher said even before he completed negotiations with some of the teams that had drafted him that he would not return to New York. 7, SANYO Technics SLB210 DC Servo Automatic Belt Drive Turntable TAS-3000 REMOTE TELEPHONE ANSWERING MACHINE JORDAN'S PRICE $-jJ-j995 with Cuein icj JORDAN'S PRICE Incoming Message Tape Outgoing Message Tape Remote Control, Etc. Young Is a pre-law student who expects to graduate in late April. He previously told The Enquirer, "I think I owe it to the school to graduate.

"We didn't score In our last eight possessions," Donoher said. "But again give Xavier credit." Donoher's summation: "They were far more aggressive." The poor start for Jenkins, a 17-point average scorer, failed to discourage the senior leader. "I had good shots, some Just rimming, but they Just didn't go in." IT WAS Xavler's first triumph in five years In the ancient series that now Is 98 games old and if you had to point to a hero it would have to be Fleming who finished with 21 points. Jenkins' 20 points would look flashier because 16 of them came In the second half after the zilch first period. But in the main, it was Fleming who delivered the clutch hoop, especially Inside the last minute when the Flyers, in one desperate challenge to pull it out, closed within five points, 66-61, with 28 seconds to play. Fleming responded with the last six points.
