Mayor Ab Jenkins rewrote the record book for endurance speed tests on the Bonneville salt flats Alf Engen captured the national ski jumping crown Colorado university romped away with theMetropolltan invitational basketball tournament Sam Sharman won the champion of champions crown at the Grand National shoot: Miss Beverly Beck took the national junior one-meter diving championship John Geertsen and George Schneiter placed in several important professional golf tour- naments the finest skimen In the world competed in the Federation Internationale de Ski tournament at Alta Idaho university claimed the national intercollegiate boxing championships and many other athletes served the region well in bringing national recognition to the intermountain states Colorado university's brilliant basketball squad which won the New York tourney also walked off with the Big Seven champion- ship to maintain their monopoly on the title The Buffaloes also retained the conference track title with as well-rounded an aggrega- tion of stars as the league has ever seen Grid Championship Football laurels In the -circuit went to the University of Utah Redskins who started slow but finished like a whirlwind The Utah Aggies staged the major upset of the campaign by clipping the Red- skins 7-0 in their only conference defeat Probably the greatest game of the season was Utah's 21-13 4 tory over Colorado which guaranteed the honors for Utah Many fine players were uncovered during the grid season but none was sufficiently outstanding to rate either all-America honors or an invitation to the East-West all-star game at San Francisco Utah university again dominated the very limited swimming compe-y------ tition in the cortege ranks white Brigham Young university'sInex 1 perienced team walked off with the wrestling honors -tinder the guidance of Coach Wayne Soft leading the team for the first time Emery Zimmerman was the big name in Utah golf for the season by winning the open held at the Salt Lake Country club It was the third straight year that the title and major prize had gone to the golfing Zimmermans from Portland Dale Andreason a newcomer to the Utah fairway game captured the state amateur title and Billy Korns won Salt Lake City amateur 'honors Gus Becker took the Intermountain amateur title Korns? Vern Bowdle and JuddyWilcot represented the state attthe national public links tournament at Detroit but failed to place Mrs A Moore dominated the women's competition winning the state crnwn Two outstanding golf attractions were held during the season One was the exhibition at the Country club by Sammy Snead and 1 Ralph Guldahl promoted by the I Utah Gait association The other was the appearance of Patty Berg and Mrs Opal Hill playing against Mrs Helen Bertagnoie and Mrs A Moore With the war in Europe keep- ing foreign racers at home Ab Jenkins had the salt flats all to himself lie shattered an records from 50 kilometers to 24 hours of driving giving him a clean sweep of all records over 10 miles up to 48 hours Frank Mehner was the leading figure in the tennis picture win- ning the intercollegiate city and Intermountain Mies He also teamed with Gordon Giles to win the city and intercollegiate doubles titieS as well as some midwestern events The state tennis honors went to Gene Smith and Pear!
