Page 20 Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Sunday, December 23, 1984 Sports Strong Second Sparks Pioneer Victory NEW LOCATION fcY KEITH MYERS SUff Sports Writer FRANCLSVILLE Pioneer used a quarter scoring punch to knocr out West Central in a Midwest Conference battle Friday night. The Panthers caujht fire in the final three minutes ouhe second period and continued roll the rest of the way to a 73-58 Vctory. Pioneer owned just a oip-point margin after one quarter, '7-ie, thanks to the shooting of 6-2 senior Mark Aldridge. Mriia then upped the lead to 19-16 oj his third straight basket starting the second quarter. It was with 3:01 remaining in the first half when Panther guard Steve Smith was whistled for his third foul.

Pioneer Coach Jerry Olson pulled Smith in favor of freshman guard, Cameron Richter. The 5-8 sparkplug took over the slack for Aldridge and came through for six straight points in a 74-second span to give the Panthers a 25-16 lead. From there the Panthers grabbed a 31-20 half time lead. Pioneer 73 West Central 58 Writing another chapter in the Pioneer scoring book was forward Craig Carlson. The 6-3 senior started off the second half by ripping the net for the first eight Panther points to stake them out to a 39-22 lead.

The Trojans attempted to come back with the sharp- shooting backcourt pair of Bob Knebel and Troy Barnett in the final period. The two consistently ripped the nets, wishing with 30 of the Trojans points. Knebel ended with 18 pouts and Barnett hit for 12 markers. The two guards also 16 of Trojans 26 four- quartei points but could not dent the 15-pOnt Panther lead. The Pinthers hit 49 percent from the teld on 31 of 63 shooting.
