THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRERMonday, June 23, 1980 B-9 'Rough Cut' Is Aptly Named DAVID NIVEN is a Scotland Yard investigator in "Rough Cut." I ') and filming cheat straight through the film by hewing to the surface plot. Only in a whirlwind scene at the very end does a torrent of wholesale explanation clear all the problems away from the multiple happy endings. The whole affair limps. Scenes that should snap with wit ooze. Scenes that should leap with adventure putter along.

Reynolds' native Jubilance stays under wraps. Niven looks dreadful. Down is lovely but not particularly stylish. The backgrounds are posh but empty. Probably Alfred Hitchcock could have cooked this stew into a royal entertainment.

But, then he did; in "To Catch a Thief," which is to be recommended, where "Rough Cut" definitely Is not. cheerful but slightly mocking, offhanded way. His Innate sense of fun keeps him from ever taking the action or even his own machismo very seriously. AGAIN, WHY Seigel? Because of the diamond robbery plot? Possible, but again, not wholly logical. This robbery is a light-fingered caper, not a main strength struggle between dedicated good and evil as in "Dirty Harry." There's little here on which to build out-and-out action and Seigel built almost none.

A script that positions its basic romantic comedy against expensive, elegant backgrounds in exotic European locales and a $30 million diamond robbery. A director most noted for his work with major male stars and slam bang action-adventure narratives. SO, HOW come all that turned Into pallid, flaccid, placid mush? Hard to say, but it did-ln "Rough Cut," the Don Seigel film with Burt Reynolds, Lesley-Anne Down and David Nlven that's olay-ing at several Mid-States cinemas.

As a guess, the choice of Seigel by producer David Merrick was the prime mistake. The long Seigel ouevre Includes some grand successes beginning with the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and extending through Clint Eastwood's Initial "Dirty Harry" film. He also directed John Wayne in "The Shootlst" and Charles Bronson In "Telefon." Laughter and romance do not loom large In much of anything Seigel has done. So, why Seigel? Because of Reynolds? Possible, but not wholly logical. While Reynolds has played his share of adventures, his screen persona is a long remove from Wayne's, Eastwood's or Bronson's.
