"We just didnt execute last week. We have to do it in this game." And, In order to get the job done, a big part of Miami success depends on the return to form of tailback Bob Hitchens. He had a horrendous day against Toledo, which held him to only 60 yards rushing.

"You can't be great every week," says Mallory. "He had a bad day. But he'll be back." One player who wont be back against Miami this year is Western Michigan's leading ball carrier, Larry Cates, who broke his right band against Ohio University. Miami could be the spoiler for Western Michigan and Kent State, but coach Mallory doesn't like the word. "It Isn't a matter of us spoiling it for another team," says the MTJ coach "It's a matter of us beating a good team" He says Miami now is In position where It has two choices. "We have two ways to go," says Mallory. "We can quit or try harder. It's as simple as that." After last week's loss to Toledo did Mallory make any changes for today's Western match? "I dont believe we have Dave Bristol By BILL ANZER Enquirer Sports Reporter OXFORD, Ohio They've virtually taken away all hopes Miami may have had for a Mid-America Conference football title.

But one thing coach Bill Mallory says hasn't been taken away is pride and he promises it will show up today when his Redskins meet Western Michigan. Miami had its title hopes knocked cockeyed last week by Toledo. That leaves an Incentive problem "A winning season is enough incentive to work for," says Mallory. "But, right now, it's a matter of pride to come back and win after last week. We have to pick up the pieces." Picking up the pieces means beating a good Western Michigan team IIM" L'11" m-m mm.

i.u.... Hill Leader In Texas Open By United Press International With its hopes for a conference and possibly a na-1 1 a 1 championship already dashed, Colorado will still consider the 1972 season a highly successful one providing the Buffaloes can beat Nebraska Saturday. Before the start of the season, Colorado, along with Nebraska and Oklahoma, was considered a definite contender for the Big Eight championship and possibly the No. 1 ranking in the nation. The Buffaloes, however, even with a 20-14 triumph over Oklahoma two weeks ago, saw their title hopes disappear with stunning upset defeats by unranked Oklahoma State and Missouri.

The Colorado-Nebraska clash at Boulder will be nationally televised and the Buffs' star running back Charlie Davis is ready for both the Cornhus-kers and the television cameras. Davis, who has gained 785 yards in eight games and scored 11 touchdowns, was forced to miss the first half of last week's loss to Missouri because of a bruised shoulder he suffered against Oklahoma when he ran into a television camera. Nebraska, ranked third, has won six games in a row in devastating fashion following a season-opening upset loss to UCLA. The Huskers are the nation's leading scoring team, averaging 47.4 points a game, while boasting the best defense, allowing opponents only 173.9 yards and 4.9 points a contest. "Colorado Is not only the best team we have faced thus far, but will be the first team that will run right at us," said Nebraska coach Bob Devaney.

Quarterback David Humm directs Nebraska's potent attack. Humm is the leading passer in the Big Eight with 89 completions in 162 attempts for 1,498 yards and ranks fifth nationally in total offense with a 208 yard per-game average. Nebraska is still on the trail of a second straight national championship, but the two teams currently ranked ahead, Southern California and Alabama, dont figure to slip this week. The top ranked Trojans of USC travel to Seattle to face Washington State while Alabama meets Mis- sissippl State. Both USC and the Crimson Tide are overwhelming favorites.

Elsewhere, fourth ranked Ohio State and fifth ranked Michigan, pointing to their titanic Big Ten clash on Nov. 25, figure to remain unbeaten. Woody Hayes' Buckeyes take on Minnesota while Michigan looks for its eighth win in a row against Indiana. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma, with only the loss to Oolo- rado marring its record, tackles once-beaten Iowa State, also a loser to the Buffaloes. The game is at Ames, Iowa, and while the Sooners are listed as 16 point favorites, the game could be a lot closer.

Act oh from Carthago Fair Ground 761-2324 From Enquirer Wires DAVE BRISTOL, former manager of the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers major league baseball teams, has returned as third-base coach of the Montreal Expos, according to a Friday announcement by Expos general manager Jim Fanning, who said Bristol would replace Jimmy Bragan, now handling scouting duties i 7 ill Jack Ham will be able to play against the Bengals. Both suffered ankle injuries in the Buffalo game last week, and of the two Greenwood seems the more seriously hurt Also definitely missing will be Terry Bradshaw's backup quarterback Terry Hanrat-ty, who's out with a pulled hamstring muscle. The Steelers have activated rookie Joe Gilliam, one of the few black quarterbacks In the NFL, from Tennessee State If the Bengals win the AFC's Central Division championship they will play in one of the two conference playoff games at Riverfront Stadium, and if they win the AFC championship, final step to the Super Bowl, also will be played Pittsburgh's George Webster and Cincinnati's Ron Prit-chard, both former Houston linebackers who were traded to the Steelers and Bengals a little over a week ago, will be on opposite sides of the field at Three Rivers Stadium Sunday The St. Louis Cardinals Friday acquired rookie running back Steve Conley from the Bengals on waivers. Cardinal coach Bob Hollway said Conley will play Sunday at Philadelphia and will be used Initially on special teams.

He told Pittsburgh writers "We don't need to be psyched for Sunday's game.

All we have to do is remember we're playing the Bengals. That's enough to get us up but good." Meanwhile, after the Bengals ran through a final heavy practice Friday at Spinney Field, coach Paul Brown repeated his views of earlier in the week that "This is a pivotal game." But he wouldn't go as far as Dan Rooney. "It's an Important game for us," Brown said, "and well have to be at our best, but it's not like the one that wins this one is in command for the rest of the season. "Am I excited?" he repeated a question. "No, not really.

You have to remember I've been here before there have been so many big ones. But there is an anticipation. "Let's dont forget that both we and Pittsburgh have some tough games ahead. We have to play Oakland and Baltimore and the Bears and Giants, and we have Cleveland again. "They play Minnesota, Kansas City, Cleveland twice and wind up In San Diego.

They have a good offense and a good defense, but I think we have the best they've faced. "It will," Brown mused, "be an interesting game." The Bengals fly out of Greater Cincinnati Airport for Pittsburgh at 3:30 p.m. today, and will make their headquarters at the Pittsburgh Hilton. BENGAL BITES Pittsburgh still isn't sure whether defensive end L.C. Greenwood, whom some consider as much of a threat as Mean Joe Greene, and linebacker Corwin Nixon, manager of operations at Lebanon and Hamilton raceways In Ohio and Latonia Raceway In Florence, will receive the Ohio Harness Writers Association award for meritorious service.

Lew Williams, Ohio's 1972 driving champion, will receive the groups Achievement Award Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell, in answer to rumors he would sell his National Football League team to a group of Cleveland busi 'Top Bengals' Steeler By DICK FORBES Enquirer Sports Reporter Dan Rooney dropped the biggest bomb In Pittsburgh Friday since they rebuilt the Golden Triangle. like Dandy Don on Monday night television, he "told it like It Is." Young Rooney, vice president of the Pittsburgh Steelers, told writers Sunday's game with Cincinnati "is the Steelers biggest game since our playoff game with Philadelphia In 1947." Since all we've heard all week are phrases like coach Don Noll's "the game we're playing on Sunday is always our biggest game," Rooney's remarks had particular meaning. Rooney referred to the 1947 playoff for the Eastern Division of the then National Football League in which the Steelers went down to a 21-0 pasting by the Eagles. It was the closest the Steelers have ever come to a division title, let alone an NFL championship in the 40-year history of the franchise. Pittsburgh has to go down as the most frustrated pro team in any sport.

It's better than an even money bet that if Dan Rooney thinks this is the biggest game for the Steelers In 25 years, which must certainly reflect the views of his father, Pittsburgh's owner Art Rooney, then the feeling must prevail through the team all the way to the water boy. Pittsburgh reports say Cincinnati is the main obstacle to the Steelers' long, long dream of a division championship and a berth in the playoffs, even if there will be six more games to go after Sunday. The game pits Cincinnati's defense, No. 1 In the entire NFL, and also broken down No. 1 against both rustling and passing, against a tremendous steeler 's ground game that has produced more than 200 yards In each of their last three games.

The big reason Is the emergence of rookie running back Franco Harris as one of the biggest breakaway threats In the league. He has Joined with Fren-chie Fuqua, the other starter, along with Preston Pearson and Steve Davis. "We'll take our group over any other in the league," Steeler assistant coach Dick Hoak says, which should be some sort Cancer Bowl Cards Six Riverfront Games The third annual Youth Cancer Bowl featuring a six-game program, is scheduled for Riverfront Stadium today, sponsored by the Boys Football of America organization. the schedule Is as follows: i 11 year-olds St. Francis-St.

"That we will discontinue the sport Is a possibility," Villanova's president, the Rev. Edward J. McCarthy told the newspaper.

"My own reaction at the moment Is that we do not want to cut it out. But we need better promotion, alumni support and student support. If it is not useful you out it out Just like you would an academic program," r. McCarthy said. He dispelled the notion that the football program Is paying its own way.

"Last year our deficit was $315,662," he said. "That is about normal for the past few seasons One year was uniy fsuz.uuu because of a television contract for a game with Boston College." A final decision on the fate of football at the suburban Philadelphia university is due when Fr. McCarthy meets with the Athletic Advisory Commission at season's end. Turnouts to Wildcat games this season have been -disappointing: 5,705 for William and Mary; for U.S. Marines and 9,832 for Boston College, a key rival.

(POLITIf.A!. A2V.1 SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (UPI) Mike Hill got the spark he needed by almost aclng the 12th hole Friday on his way to a four-un-der-par 68 that gave him a two-round total of 135 and a stroke lead Midway through the $125,000 Texas Open. Hill grabbed the lead over Larry White, a onetime second string player on the University of Houston golf team, and former U.S. Open Winner Orville Moody.

Both White and Moody shot 69s over the 7011-yard, par-72 Woodlake Golf Club course, and Moody's score could have been super if he had not missed seven putts of 10 feet or less. Lee i made a charge toward the front but bogeyed two of the final three holes and stalked off the course with a 69 for a two-round figure of 140 five strokes off the lead. Hill, 33, the brother of sometimes tempestuous Dave Hill, got going on the back ndne after having to settle for an even par 36 on the front side.
