Nevada State Journal Thursday, April 24, 1969-17 Sierra FIELD and -STREAM By P. CORLETT Supervisor Nevada Fish and Game Department White Crappies Hit Lures; They're as Tasty as Trout White crappies have begun to well at Rye Patch Reservoir and they're just beginning to show up once in a while at Lahontan. This fish is a long-time favorite of ours and we're hoping that the year will be a big one for crappies at Lahontan, Rye Patch and Weber reservoirs, our principal crappie factories. Table qualities of this fish are excellent most people regard them as a far better eating fish than trout. Their fighting qualities are excellent too.

The best way of preparing a crappie for the table is to fillet him just make a cut along the backbone on top from head clear to the tail, and then do the same along the bottom. Chop off head and tail and peel the skin away. Now, with a small bladed, sharp knife, cut the fillet on one side away from the ribs and backbone and pull free. Repeat the process on the other side of the fish. This will eliminate the need for scaling and removing the entrails.

You will have two white fillets nearly as big as the palm of your hand and they need only rinsing in cold water to be ready for frying. Main Bearings Stolen Again At Sparks Yard The Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Co. facility at 1635 Pittman Sparks, certainly has no obligation to do so-but maybe should keep an old box full of ball bearings around to hand out to kids. What has happened several times in the past, and what happened most recently, is that thieves, believed to be marbleplaying youngsters, have entered the company yards and made off with a number of devices known as "ball transfers," which are roller-type devices used to slide sheet steel around the yards. The main bearings on these devices, each of which cost about $15, are supported by 20 one quarter inch ball bearings.

The little ball bearings make excellent "shooters" for marble players. The cost of supplying such "marbles" to youngsters was most recently reported at $120. That was the loss estimated at the steel company Tuesday in the disappearance of 15 of the rollers. In previous reports filed with police, a large number of the rollers have been reported stolen, and the loss to the company has been considerable. Soviet Planner Zharskz Dies MOSCOW (UPI) Zharskz, deputy chief Soviet State Planning tee, died Tuesday, agency Tass reported day.

He was 49. Of course you must catch your crappie before you fillet him. Here are some ways of doing it: Thread a minnow on a number 8 fine wire hook, put a split shot 8 or 9 inches above, fasten a bobber 4 feet or SO above that and cast out with spinning gear. Retrieve slowly SO that your reel handle is bareIly turning over. When you feel a very gentle strike, just reel the fish on in.

If you try to set the hook, you'll tear it out of the soft cartilage of the crappie's mouth every time. Another way is to use the same spinning outfit but substitute a crappie jig, streamer fly, maribou fly or cork body popping bug for the minnow, and eliminate the bobber. The jig will probably have enough weight to allow you to cast it properly but the popper bug, streamer fly or maribou fly will require that you add a couple of split shot for weight. Handle these lures about the same as minnows. Cast out, allow to sink nearly to the bottom and retrieve very slowly.

White, blue, or white-and-blue, seem the best colors for the streamers or maribou flies, and black seems to be best for the popping bugs. Or if you don't have a spinning rod, use any of these lures with your fly rod. Of course you will not be able to handle as much weight and it will accordingly take longer for your lure to sink to the bottom. The fly rod is a mite slower, but maybe its use is a little more sporting. A crappie bonanza will be welcome this year, for most of our rivers and streams are too swollen and muddy with spring run-off for either planting or fIshing.

We'd predict that you'd rather catch and eat crappie, than trout, anyway. Give it a try if you are not already an addict. FIELD NOTES Lahontan Reservoir White catfish, black bullheads, white bass, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and now and then a white crappie. Pyramid Still holding up a random check last weekend showed 65 fishermen with 111 keeper fish. Perch fishing is picking up on the northwest side.

Rye Patch Bass and crappies are hitting pretty well, mostly on minnows. Topaz Low on fishing pressure and not too much success. Tahoe Good for macks and not bad at all for rainbows. Sen.

James I. Gibson, D-Hen-ing derson said the office of Attorney General Harvey Dickerson was guilty of "unnecessary harassment" the three officials of the Mark Twain com- who had been charged with embezzlement but were cleared by a jury in Reno. The criticism came both dura discussion in the Senate Finance Committee and on the floor of the upper house. It was over a bill to give $7,500 to Stanley Brown, who was the lawyer for one of the defendants who said he was rupt. Gibson said the "state forced this issue.

The money should come from the attorney general's budget or his hide." He said although the defendants were acquitted, their professional reputations were destroyed. Under the law an who defends an indigent client is entitled to only $300 in a non-capital case. The trial took more than eight weeks. Sen. James Slattery, R-Reno, said the trial ruined Brown's life since he had to give up his private practice during the interim.

OPEN DAILY 10-9; SAT. AND SUN. 10-7 SAT. SUN. Slattery said the attorney gereral's office hired a private lawyer for $13,000 to help prosecute the case and still the state lost.

Sen. Archie Pozzi, R-Carson City, said "'The attorney general should try his own cases." The bill was approved in the finance committee and then passed in the upper house 15-5. It now goes to Gov. Paul Laxalt. Opponents of the bill said It would open the door to similar claims from other attorneys.

They expressed fear they would be flooded next session with similar requests. But proponents said this was a special case.
