Probably the best known is a version of the Great Flood story that tells of a man of India f0' i who buries his dead son In a large pumpkin; later, the shell Is found to be full of water and big fish. When the people try to catch the fish, they accidentally drop the pumpkin, breaking it and releasing a flood that covers the Earth. THE WORLD of letters hasn't done much Justice to pumpkins.

But Washington Irving, at least, Included one In his short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The hero, Ichabod Crane, Is a tall, skinny, welrd-looklng schoolmaster with the unfortunate habit of believing what he hears. After hearing tell of the legend of the Headless Horseman, poor Ich sets off one night on his faithful horse, Gunpowder. In the shadows, he spies the goblin. The goblin flings his head at Crane. It shatters.

The head, we learn later, was a pumpkin. Sort of a starring role, but nothing classy. in the land of fairy tales, of course, the most famous pumpkin story of them all Is the saga of whose fairy godmother taps a big pumpkin with her wand and turns It into a golden coach to take her to the ball, where she meets a prince, loses her shoe and lives happily ever after.
