The tournament was called the Southern Appalachian, and will be held again this year in the latter part of August. The players of Asheville plan to at! tract to this tournament players from all of the southeast. Sam D.

Holt of Asheville sent me a very interesting hand from the tournament last year. North's opening bid of two diamonds is a little optimistic, but his partner had passed and North was a bold bidder, with a love for slams. So when South bid four clubs, he jumped to six diamonds. We must admit that he played the hand nicely to make the contract, The opening club lead was won in dummy with the jack, and two rounds of diamonds disclosed the bad break in that suit. North saw that his only chance to make the contract was to find East with a doubleton club and the two missing kings.

So a second round of clubs was played, then the diamond queen cashed and East thrown in the lead by playing another diamond. Vou can see East's helpless situation. He must lead either a heart or a spade, in either case into declarer's tenace position. The other loser will be discarded on the fourth club, thus making the optimistic six-diamond contract.
