Buddha Club Application aces Delay 'Gazette Journal Carson City Bureau Twelve applicants for unre stricted Nevada gaming licenses got the green light from the State Gaming Control Board yesterday and now must wait only final ap proval from the State Gaming Commission July 19 to get their dice rolling in the legal ized wagering industry The board denied one applicant and deferred action on 13 others as it considered an agenda of 26 requests for table gaming li censes Among applications deferred were those of the Happy Buddha Club in Reno to change locations and become the China Mint and Sam Scardamaglia to become a corporation officer in Club Cal Neva The commission referred both back to the board for further study last month Recommend Denial Recommended for denial were John Williams and Tony Ancho for the Battle Mountain Club at Battle Mountain Al though the application was filed last April board members noted they had still failed to supply re quested information or pay re quired fees Woodrow Loftin won board approval to buy the 36 per cent interest held in the El Capitan Club Hawthorne by Bernard At the lamingo Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip five long time stockholders Edward Bar rick Sam Ziegman John Gaug han Morris Baker and Chester Simms were recommended for approval as percentage holders in a new operating company that took over this spring in an $11 000000 Gazette Journa Carson City Bureau ive original investors in the Holiday Hotel are pulling out and selling their stock back to Crum ley Hotels Inc in a quarter mil lion dollar deal the State Gaming Control Board was informed yes terday The investigative agency was asked to approve the transaction as required by gaming regula tions covering the transfer of in terest among licensees but failed to do so because the agreement did not bear the signatures of the five stockholders Selling out their interest in the Holiday are John Berger of Elko and William Hawkins John Richards Lee Brock and McCarthy all Idaho busi nessmen The holdings represent 2607 per cent of the hotel stock Under the agreement payment will be made over a period of 60 months Attorney William Woodburn Demos to Gather or Regain Assembly Seat Artie Valentine a former assemblyman from Sparks filed his candidacy for election yester day with County Clerk Harry Brown Valentine is seeking to re gain the post he held in 1957 and 1958 in the lower house of the state legislature Valentine a 32 year old rail road conductor elected to the assembly in 1956 but sought unsuccessfully to regain the seat in 1958 He also failed in proved a of over the ourth of July weekend Airport Manager Mal colm Wordell reported yesterday A total of 502 operations were reported between riday and Monday with 205 overnight tie downs Biggest operational day was on riday when 144 opera tions were recorded followed by 121 on Saturday 121 on Sunday and 116 on Monday Sunday night saw 71 overnight stays with 43 on riday 51 on Saturday and 40 the negotia tions a quonset hut will be placed at the airport for use by the USES At present the service maintains a helicopter there Trailer Control Plan Urged for Lake Tahoe AUBURN Calif James Brown president of the Tahoe Improvement and Conservation Association at Lake Tahoe has recommended to county supervis ors all house trailers be located in licensed trailer courts in pre cisely zoned areas of the county The recommenda tion follows a report made to the supervisors by a committee of county officials which made the same recommendation and also asked a zoning position be established to enforce such a regulation Brown in a letter to the board stated he also hopes a policy per mitting property owners to have house trailers on the property while a building is being construct ed is abandoned He said the policy has produced some undesirable elements includ ing a scattering of trailers par ticularly in the Kings Beach area a blunting of the purpose of zon ing regulations and an trol yesterday afternoon orestry officials said they thought the blaze was caused by a lightening strike The fire started in an open spot in rugged timbered terrain four miles west of Susanville Two aerial tankers working out of Chester in Plumas County dumped suppressant on the fire to aid ground personnel The area was patrolled last night by 15 inmates of the Plum Creek conservation camp in Te hama County Lightning strikes in the Lassen National orest Tuesday sent 50 firefighters two aerial tankers Summer School Session Starts AL TAHOE The sixth annual Lake Tahoe summer session con ducted by Sacramento State Col lege started yesterday with an enrollment of 85 Henry Hansen director of the session said students may earn two hours of credit during each of the three two week ses sions Courses are offered in drama art audio visual education an thropology speech and elemen tary school social studies There is a tuition fee of $10 per college unit Classes will be held from 9 am to noon against Crescent Creamery Inc charging undercutting of cost on certain dairy products in a contract with Stead Air orce Base The commission is seeking a permanent injunction against the distributor Under terms of the contract Crescent Creamery was to begin delivery to Stead on July 1 with bid prices in effect until June 30 1961 Certain items were bid below cost which is of statute proviisons that prohibit sale below cost and regulations of the commission the complaint states Unless an injunction is granted the commission contends the pur poses of the law will be and fthe distributor will one of the three Reno positions on the seven mem ber board Pine has served on the non partisan board since September of 1956 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy He was sub sequently elected to the board He is a former state highway engineer having been appointed in 1956 and serving until early this year when he resigned to take the private industry assign ment He is also former general secretary of the Associated Gen eral Contractors Pine is a native of Nevada He has been active in Masonic or ders in the 365th Engineering Group of the Corps of Engineers and in various civic and profes sional groups Salesman Held As Holdup Man Sparks police are holding James ranklin Stouffer 24 year old salesman on suspicion of the $210 armed robbery of the Park Grocery Store yesterday morn ing Stouffer who told police had no milk for the baby entered the store at 15th and Prater Way about 2:10 am Police said he pulled a small pistol from his right hip pocket and ordered Clerk Albert Perks: the money in the sack just the paper no silver des he warned Stouffer al legedly stuffed the gun back in his pocket and walked out the door and to his car parked be hind the store Before slipping out he ordered Perks to me five minutes before you call Stouffer was captured after a Sparks officer on routine patrol spotted the car parked in back A blond woman appeared to be sleeping inside While the officer went inside to inquire about the car the robbery suspect and the woman drove away Learning that a robbery had just taken place Sparks police put out the description of the car to Reno police and dep uties Stouffer and the woman identified as Marjorie Mabel Gal lo 20 a waitress were found later at the 4 Motel on street A baby was taken from the couple and placed in a private home by welfare authorities Stouffer from orrest Town Pa was booked for armed rob bery and the woman listed as a transient for investigation of armed robbery IRE PUT OUT CRYSTAL BAY A brush fire near the Brockway Hotel was quickly responded to by volun teers of the North Tahoe ire Department Tahoe City ire De partment and the orest Rang ers The fire covered approxi mately 150 square feet before be ing brought under control and kept from spreading to nearby homes and the Brockway Hotel newspapers before coming to the area Mr Curtis is survived by lais widow Mrs Thelma Curtis of Doyle two daughters Mrs Ka ren McCulley and Miss Cheryl Curtis both of Reno a son Berkeley Curtis Jr of Mon rovia Calif a granddaughter Laura McCulley of Reno and his mother Mrs Curtis of Doyle and five smokejumprs into a con centrated area to combat the fires ive small fires in the north east section of the forest were contained with the largest de stroying only a third of an acre Eleven small fires broke out in the Mineral District of the forest between Morgan Mountain and Child's Meadow All were quickly snuffed out 91.
