N.F.O. Writer Says Subsidy To Others Exceeds Farm Mr. Editor: Here is something for business ivii'ii. worker and farmers lo 1'iink about' When the govern- "»-nt plllrha..;es defense material from industry. contracts are "'"ile o<it iimt assure a very sntisfaciory profit to the produ- eeis. When food is bought, it is dene without reference to profit or Joss . to the farm producers. V (< (: fan" price support losses fioin the beuiniiini', of tlu- farm program I" January I, 1951!, were .slightly over !i billion dollars. Mail subsidies for the 10 years from I (HI) - - | DM! were ahriost '< billion dollars. Business reconversion payments were over 43 billion, maritime organizations 3!<4 billion and subsidies to airlines over Vj billion. Isn't all this an indication that the farmer better conduct his business in a more business like way? N. F. O. has the plan which only needs sufficient cooperation by farmers to absolutely make it. work! Is N.F.O. going to be selfish and keep all of the gains to it- sell? May 1 explain this in the words of one of my good farmer friends, Halvor Jacobson of Lc- land, Iowa. Here are some 1 of the things he said in n letter recent- ly published in the Des Moines Register. His letter was in answer to what someone had called the "N.F.O. Pork Plan." He snys: "To clarify this so called pork plan, it is but a small part of N. F. O.'s permanent marketing plan which will help the farmer by giving him a price that will restore buying power, help the customer by giving him a better product, help the packer and processors by guaranteeing a steady flow of hogs or grain so the}' can plan a definite labor force f and have a quality product) and help the laborer by providing a much greater labor demand. Perhaps the greatest benefit will be to the small businessman who has been hurt almost as badly as the farmers through loss of trade. We need production cuts although in the $10.00 hog year of 1955 there was only an 8'/v surplus. Merely marketing hogs then nt the 200 pound average instead of the 22r> pound average they were sold at would have given a 17'.£'.* cvit in weight and the consumer would have had a lot less lard lo trim off. A tremendous effort has been made by many Midwest farmers in planning the N. F. O. program. It shouldn't be belittled by someone who is- speaking from hearsay My own opinion of N.F.O. wasn't g-ood either until I attended several meetings. I am now a member and agree with thousands of other farmers that we should take politics out of the farm problem and solve it ourselves. In six months of farmer cooperation we can have this problem whipped, if we put our minds to it, instead of sitting idly by, bickering over trivialities and being divided by politicians and the organized marketing system that has taken our profits all of JTuesdoy, Oct. 18, 1960 Maona (lo.)
