7i THE CINCINNATI FA'QUIRER Tuesday, January 8, 1974 Wednesday's 'Fragile Mind' Looks At Mental Health happy as thpy could be." 4 iMJ 1(4 What comes from the four adults "Is the courage to admit they need somn help," she pointed out. Thu program makes lt very clear that help for people with? such mental problems Is now available nearly everyplace in this country. It may sound provincial" on my part to recommend-this special because a Cln-? cinnatl product produced the meeting of the" Hoffmans was not reviewed until the documentary was srreened. Better believe me: This needs to be seen by YOU! THERE ARE any number of reasons why you should watch the 10-11 p.m. Wednesday ABC-TV "Fragile Mind" documentary on Channel 12.

First of all, it's the first TV program that Ctncinnatl-born Kay Hoffman has ever had the title of producer. And, Kay would be the first to say that more importantly, the hour deals mental health. And, it deals with such a variety of emotional disorders, that at least one of the cases will be associated with your family. And, If nothing else appeals to you, the hostess for this pertinent hour is Joanne Woodward. Because of its material, "Fragile Mind" could turn out to be one of the most important network news documentaries this season.

in an excellent, tasteful manner. One is an overworked Texas architect-contractor who was afraid to travel to the homes his company designed and built. A depressed Los Angeles mother gains a new life by going back to school. A Portland, Oregon, drug addict turns about-face after falling because of a lack of her father's attention. An overly dependent Rochester, N.

woman is mentally lost when her husband dies. And, a 10-year-old Texas school troublemaker, youngest of eight children, has to be close to his mother. UNTIL NOW, Kay's credits with Alan Lands-burg Productions over the past three-years-plus have been confined to post- three times across the country to handle production details. She spent considerable time in Washington D. C.

with the National Institute of Mental Health, a government agency and the National Association for Mental Health, a private, non-profit agency. THE RESULTS? "I hope and I feel we have accomplished a basic Introductory course to therapy," she told me. "These people aren't crazy, they are Just not as Kay Hoffman with Ziv BEFORE GOING into a Cincinnati Christmastime meeting of the two non-related Hoffmans (Kay and. Steve), let me tell you about' the people she reveals to you llilililn- production co-ordinator and associate producer. Now, she figures she ranks "neck and neck" with another associate for the fourth rung in Landsburg's 12-person LA company.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hoffman, Wyoming-he's a ford Motor Co. exec-in Cincinnati-Kay went through nearby Miami University bent on becoming a grade school teacher. Instead, she answered a classified ad and Joined Cincinnati's Ziv Television, becoming the late Barney Cragston's secretary in the Cisco Kid division.

She's been In TV ever since, moving onto United Artists and David Wolper Productions In New York. When Landsburg left Wolper and set up his LA firm, Kay joined after loafing around Southern California her first six months there. "I KNEW I would be going with Alan because he likes people who can work in various directions!" Kay said. She has been able to learn the complete behind-the-scene work of TV-film production because "small staffs out of necessity are exposed to all facets." She has had her hands in some fine Landsburg documentary productions the last few years: Patricia Neal's "Life, Death and the American Woman," the first two "American Idea" spe- TV-Kadio Kriefs ABC- CBS Mo vies To nigh 's Bes I ill mmmmimmMMmMM T.X.X 2 rt cials, "The Land" and "My Father Gave Me America" and "In Search of Ancient Astronauts," predecessor of Its sequel, "In Search of Ancient Mysteries," set to air January 31 on NBC-TV. Kay figures she had the communications "bug" when she first went to Miami, out of Wyoming High School, to study voice.

Now in her middle 30s, she's a tall (5-7), slim attractive blond with looks good enough to be mistaken for a Hollywood performer. KAY HOFFMAN doesn't feel the Women's Lib twinge. "There are a lot of women In various phases of television production," she said. "I don't feel any problems and there are no male chauvenistic problems in this show!" With Landsburg, Kay figures she has had great opportunity to grow creatively. "Little companies and small places allow you to learn twice as much while working twice as hard!" she proclaimed without complaint.

Her other involvements have included Mel Tonne's 1971 "Very Good Year" summer musical series, the pro basketball halftime "One-on-One" competitive vignettes (she wrote those scripts and edited the shows), and an upcoming ABC Movie of the Week, "Uncle Sam's Hard Luck Hotel," written by Truman Capote. SHE WILL get associate producer's credits for two upcoming dramas in ABC's late-night Wide World of Entertainment slot, "Death in Space" with George Maharis and Cameron Mitchell and the yet-to-be casted "Murder Impossible." Wednesday's hour first got Kay's attention 13 months ago, soon after the Idea was sold to Bristol-Meyers the sponsor.
