"The rest may be good for it," Carter said. "Throwing a football is harder than being a pitcher in baseball.

You use a different more difficul motion, and you throw harder with a heavier ball." There was a little more encouraging report on Ken Dyer Wednesday. Dr. George Ballou told Brown, "He has movement In his hands now, which is very encouraging, has been getting action in his feet and he can be raised up slightly in his bed." Willis belongs In there," he said. "He could play either back, they do so much the same things. "But Fred and Doug (Dressier) will get in there, and you know we've been using Essex (Johnson) a lot and he's got the best average on the club." Finally, Brown says he's aware that this is "an in-terdivisional game and important, but as far as I'm concerned, they're all of giant proportions to us." BENGAL BITES Defensive tackle Steve Cho-myszak, nursing a sore groin muscle, won't be able to practice until Friday or Saturday, and could be considered "doubtful" Greg Cook was throwing the football again Wednesday, and Brown said, "I watched him and he was doing fairly well.

He showed some improvement. He couldn't be activated now, and I think we'll leave him where he is until we think he can help us." Did Brown still hope Greg could play this year? "I haven't seen It yet," he replied. Cook has been on "unable to perform" status, but could return to practice with the team Friday Guy Ingles, an offensive end on Nebraska's national championship football team last year, has been signed by the Bengals as a free agent, and Royals' Rookies Guests At 6 Gym Table' Mike Leonard, right, president of tine Cincinnati Club's Gym Table's "Meet The Royals" luncheon Wednesday. Nevertheless, Brown feels, "It all comes back to Nelsen. (Tight end) Milt Morin had his greatest day against Pittsburgh last Sunday, but Nelsen was finding him and hitting him. They're at the mercy of Nelsen's health." Brown said the Browns, against Pittsburgh, "looked like they looked against us In Cleveland last year. Remember, they had to use Mike Phipps against us here. They throw a lot to their backs and a lot of screens." Earlier this season Bengal linebacker coach Vince Costello, answering audience questions about Paul Brown's policy of calling plays from the sidelines, brought up Nelsen's name in reply.

"There are pros and cons on anything," Costello said. "If I had a guy like Terry Bradshaw (at Pitts-' burgh) I'd call every play. With a guy like Bill Nelsen, that's his strongest point his ability to call the right plays." Although he concedes, "We've talked about it," Brown said he'll make no change in the starting offensive backfield for the Browns. And even four days before the actual combat at Riverfront Stadium Sunday, there were some verbal artillery barrages.

In Cleveland, flanker Gary Collins said he was looking forward to the game and another engagement with Bengal corner-back Lemar Parrish. "I'm anxious to see Mr. Parrish," Collins said. "I didn't do too badly against him in Cleveland last year, but he sort of made a fool of me in the second one at Cincinnati." Collins noted that he had rib problems all last season "and they were sort of bothering me about that time. It was really a painful thing every time I got hit.

"But don't get me wrong. Parrish is a good back and he's probably better now. He was a rookie last season. I think I can do better than I did, and I'm interested in finding out for sure." At the Bengal camp Wednesday, coach Paul Brown taking a pre-prac-tice pause leaned back in a chair, propped his feet on a desk, and talked about the Browns the team he founded and coached for 17 years. "I know It's a big game, that it's on national television, and I also know we're hurting, having trouble," Brown said, bringing up the subject of Cincinnati's, season-long injury problem.

"We're playing a rookie quarterback. Sandy Durko is at safety, and he's really just a rookie. He only played 14 plays last year before he got hurt. We've lost our regular safety (Ken Dyer)." Brown said, "Bill Nelsen is their key, just as Virg Carter was our key last year when we were winning. Leroy Kelly is sound now and playing much better after getting over a sprained ankle.

"Defensively, I think Cleveland is sounder than ever. They've sealed up their corners, and drafted a No. 1 guy (Clarence Scott from Kansas State at corner back) something we cannot afford to do. The club lost 102 games this year and finished in the cellar of the American League East. The announcement was made by a club spokesman and Lipon confirmed that he will not be coming back. "i just hope whoever gets in there (as manager) can provide a winner," Lipon said. "The people in Cleveland have been good to the players and the ball club even with the bad year we had." "They deserve a winner, but I didn't get the chance to provide it for them," he said.

Lipon said that Indians president and general manager Gabe Paul called him and informed him he wouldn't be rehired. He said Paul offered him a job in the Indians' organization. "I'm going to sleep on it for a few days," Lipon said. "I'm not sure whether I'll accept the job Gabe offered me, but I'll let him know what I decide." NOW SERVING I'i-LB. By BARRY McDERMOTT Enquirer Sports Reporter Nate Archibald and Johnny Green underwent a transformation during the Cincinnati Royals opening game victory on Tuesday night.

In the preseason play, Archibald occasionally was given to throwing the ball away with attempts at flashy passes, and trying to dribble through defenses, while Green, the team's leading rebounder the last two seasons, did not approach Jiis regular form. Against the Atlanta Hawks in the opener, however, the pair excelled in all phases. Archibald scored 27 points and had 10 assists and Green, going only 36 minutes, had 21 points and 11 rebounds, plus five assists, only one short of his career high. "I don't think so," smiled Green when asked if he was going after the league assist title this year. For the past two seasons, Jumping Johnny has led the league in field goal accuracy.

"Too many good passing guards on this team." "John's been cooling it for the last couple of weeks during the exhibitions," coach Bob Cousy told an audience at a "Meet The Royals" luncheon at the Cincinnati Club Wednesday. "Someone must have told him the season started last night." Cousy was just as im-pressed with Archibald, the second year man out of the University of El Paso. The speedy guard, SINCE 1876 MATtlNGl! Moore er it in embarrassment. The Royals got the ball on an over and back call. "Nate stayed solid the entire night," said coach Cousy.

"He was great. This is what he has to do. He was running the club and not making mistakes. That kid can make the All-Star team if he plays like that this year." The Royals came out of the game in pretty good shape, with center Sam La-cey suffering an ankle injury that should be all right by the next game. That is against Boston in the Cincinnati Gardens Saturday night.

The victory at the Gardens was the 14th in the last 19 home court appearances for the club which is developing a solid group of enthusiastic supporters. Cousy is becoming more optimistic about his team's chances of winning the Central Division title. "I'll tell you, both Atlanta and Baltimore are going to know that we are around," he told the Cincinnati Club audience. "And Atlanta is going to have to play a heck of a lot better than they did last night. Baltimore has not played well in the exhibitions up to now.

If we get a lead like we did last year, with our bench strength, we aren't going to blow it." ROYALTIES All female ticketholders will get a free pair of pantyhose at the game Saturday night The Seattle Superson-ics, which appear here next Tuesday night, are picked by many to win the Pacific Division title. Spencer Haywood, the former Olympic star who went on to be Most Valuable Play er in the American Basketball Association, will be making his second Cincin nati appearance. He did not score when he played briefly against the Royals back on January 9 The Courtsiders' Club will meet at the Playboy Club today. Tom Van Arsdale and Gil McGregor will be guests The Royals were interested in Terry Driscoll, a former Boston College player under Cousy, who was waived by the Detroit Pistons. The Baltimore Bullets, however, picked up Driscoll Pet.
