Thursday, October THF INNAT1 EVil'IKKR I'J pi TP u. mj (la SS3 1 1 the name of the Boston Red Sox. Just, "that." Losing a World Series that should have been won. That is what the Reds were trying to do Wednesday night. "A hundred and 114 wins.

Not too bad," said Anerson. "There can be no winner and no loser in this Series. It has been that kind of Series. Of course, someone must win but, in reality, no one will win it." A great World Series it was. Thirteen wonderful days in October.

Then, it was over. if I I They had to juggle, parade pitchers in and out, paint themselves into a corner that they could not escape irom. Even Bilhngham, a hero at a moment when he felt the world caving in around him, could not save it. He had been called in with the game on the line, the Red Sox threatening to put it away early. He forgot his differences with Anderson over his snub and stuck out Petrocelli.

But it wasn't to be enough. The pitcher parade went on and on, eight of them coming in for the Reds, only Clay Kirby forgotten in the bullpen. WHEN IT all is over and done with, though, it will be remembered that the Red Sox did not beat the Cincinnati Reds in game No. 6. Fenway Park defeated the Reds.

The game was over, or so it seemed, the Reds on top in the eighth inning by a 6-3 score. Two out, two on and the pitcher due to hit. Rawly Eastwick was pitching and lefthander Will McEnaney was warm in the bullpen. Bernie Carbo was sent to pinch hit. He is a left-handed hitter with power.

Sparky Anderson stuck with Eastwick, even though tour left-handed hitters now might come up. HOW COULD he stick with Eastwick? "The only reason I wouldn't go to McEnaney was that if I did, they bring up Juan Beniquez to pinch hit. If he had lost the ball into the screen, I would have been sick." Sparky Anderson, therefore, was not managing against the Red Sox. He was managing against "The Green Monster." "The Green Monster" swallowed him whole. Carbo, getting a mediocre fast ball, devoured it into the centerfield seats.

"Everything worked the way I wanted it except Carbo," said Anderson. IT WAS a physical drain and a mental drain on the Cincinnati Reds. "It was like being in an ax fight and coming out second," was Anderson's graphic description, "in the sixth inning I told Ted Klus-zewski I had never hurt so much in my life." "Ti.i u-as fJe hesf J've ever managed and I lost." Sparky Anderson, Wednesday, October 22, 1975, not long after the Boston Red Sox came from behind to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, forcing a seventh World Series game. By BOB HERTZEL Enquirer Sports Reporter BOSTON There were no apologies from Sparky Anderson. He was as wide open as a boxer who continually dropped his left, exposing his jaw, but he would not apologize and would not give into the second guess.

Gary Nolan over Jack Billing-ham or Don Gullett as his starting pitcher in game No. 6. Rawly East-wick pitching to Bernie Carbo. "In this entire Wurld Series the only thing I did that was wrong was when I let Will McEnaney pitch to Rico Petrocelli in the third game, a game I won," he said. BUT IT was there for the world to see, Gary Nolan started and gave up a three-run homer to Fred Lynn, which put the Reds behind.

Sparky Anderson was being eaten away from the inside out, the pressures gnawing away at his guts. And he lost what was, perhaps, the greatest World Series game ever. "When I woke my sheets were wet, I was sweating that much," said Anderson. AND, AS he spoke, he was looking ahead to the seventh game, the final game, the end of all that started back in February. "It will be," he said, "a nightmare tonight." A nightmare, though, would be a defeat, something that had entered no Cincinnatian's mind until Bernie Carbo, then Carlton Fisk, became folk heroes with homers.

Now they think about defeat and talk about it. "If we lose I'll have to walk through the alleys of Cincinnati," said Anderson. The thought is very real. "NO ONE can tell me if we play again that the Cincinnati Reds would not be the pick. No one can tell me I'd trade my team for that," Anderson added.

Carbo's Bat Louder Than Words By TERRY FLYNN Enquirer Sports Reporter play them accordingly." It's unlikely that Carbo has earned a starting berth for next season, however. He may see a few more dollars on his contract, but not much else.

Cooper won't stay in a slump until next spring. Yaz is still one of the best in the business. And the Red Sox have Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans to handle the rest of the outfield chores. And they can all hit. ADDITIONALLY, Johnson mentioned Rick Miller, an outfielder who has been riding the bench.

"Miller is as good a defensive player as you'll find," he said, not mentioning Miller's batting capabilities. "Miller, Lynn and Evans would be the best defensive outfield in baseball." Regardless of how well Carbo distinguishes himself in the Series finale, he'll still be talking about why he should be starting next year. And someone will have the answers for him. Of course, Carbo is the first to agree that being a pinch hitter on a World Series team beats watching the action on television after ending the season with an also-ran. to put more offense in his lineup against the Reds' ace, lefty Don Gullett.

"We don't lose all that much by putting. Bernie in the outfield," Johnson said, quickly adding that there was no one in baseball who could play Fenway Park's monster left field fence better that Yaz. "This is it, and we have to think offensively," he said. Carbo was in the leadoff spot, a position he held during the regular season when he was playing the outfield or serving as the designated hitter. CARBO IS talkative, usually outgoing and a bit flaky.

He's easy to like, but he's also easy to dislike in the eyes of baseball managers because of his habit of saying whatever he feels at the time. That includes remarks about teammates, managers and the club's front office. Johnson said his use of Carbo at this point, leading off against a lefthander, wasn't intended as a reward for the outfielder's home run heroics. "Right now Bernie is hitting the ball and Cecil isn't," he said. "Cecil hit .311 for the season, but he's in a slump.

All ball players are streaky and you have to BOSTON Bernie Carbo has always been sure of himself. He's cer-. tain of his ability to play professional baseball. His problem has been con-" vincing others. Carbo, a former teammate of many current Cincinnati Reds players, remarked during the three World Series games in Cincinnati that he could play regularly.

Moreover, he said he felt he should be in the starting lineup. He seemed to back that up by belting a home run in Riverfront Stadium. He emphasized his position by doing the same thing, again as a pinch hitter, Tuesday night at Fenway Park. And Bernie got his wish. Red Sox manager Darrell Johnson put Carbo in left field for the seventh game of the Series, moving Carl Yastrzemski to first 1.
