The sale was announced to the 600 News employees and 1800 Star employees Wednesday morning, but it was not announced to the general public until late editions of both papers hit the streets Wednesday afternoon. The statement said the News had operated at a loss for more tban three years and the Star for more than two years. The Star has a daily circulation of 302,000 and the News has a dally circulation Of 209,000. The statement said the Star will continue to carry Bernstein Markland Shockley His Course congressman said he would talk to his former House colleagues where he has already observed "all shades of disenchantment with McGovern." Love said he would contact friends among the, governors. Love said that among the governors he has already talked with, "a large percentage are frightened and concerned about what McGovern has said here." Calling "a very beatable" candidate, Morton said organized labor, supporters of Gov. George Wallace of Alabama, and established political leaders were "obvious areas" where Mr.

Nixon could pick up Democratic support. "We've got a very fertile field here," he said. Morton described the convention as "one of the most divided ones In my political memory" and said he planned to report his findings to the President The former Maryland! Executives of both newspapers noted that "if present trends had been permitted to continue, either the News or the Star or both would have been forced to suspend publication, ultimately leading to a completely monopoly in Washington by the Washington Post and the general newspaper field." WASHINGTON (UPI) The tabloid Washington Daily News ceased publication after 51 years Wednesday and was sold to the Washington Evening Star for an undisclosed price, executives of the two newspapers announced. The sale left New York City as the only city in the country witih more than two Independently owned newspapers.

The newspapers, both published in the afternoon, said the sale was necessary "because it is now impossible for three independent newspapers to operate in the Washington-District of Columbia metropolitan area." Editor Richard Hollander made the announcement in the Daily News city room. "The reaction was shock," a spokesman said. "Hollander bent over and kissed a longtime woman employee of the paper. The staff began calling home to break the news to their families and a lot of us started looking for jobs." Asked what could happen to the current employees, Hollander, Who has been with the newspaper since 1929, said, "These things will have to be worked out. There are contractual agreements Blacklisted Nobel laureate William Shockley, a Stanford physicist, was to teach an undergraduate course In genetics and Intelligence but academic credit has now been withdrawn from the course.

Mrs. White, who has worked as a teacher in Hot Springs, and Los Angeles, will direct a $37 million-a-year program for training teachers of disadvantaged children. The corps will have 2680 teacher interns teaching in 127 local school districts and attending 78 colleges by the beginning ot the next school year. John J. Gilligan.

There were 18 House measures and six Senate bills, including the much-debated bill creating an Environmental Protection Agency which Gilligan listed as his administration's top legislative priority. One bill was introduced in the abbreviated House session. Rep. Alan Norris (R-Westerville), proposed the registrar of motor vehicles be required to issue color photo identification cards to persons not holding an Ohio driver's license. The fee would be $5 same as adrlver's license and cards could be issued to anyone over age 18 who applies.

Rep. Donna Pope (R-Par-ma), offered a constitutional resolution which would require a majority of voters in any political subdivision to approve low-cost housing projects initiated in the subdivision. Both houses adjourned until another skeleton ses-sion scheduled Tuesday, August 15, at 10 a. m. Plans call for the House and Senate to continue to hold skeleton sessions about a month apart until another full legislative session after the November election.
