After failing to bring home a runner in scoring position Monday night, Grace didn't fail Tuesday night.

Grace drove in three runs, including two with a tie-breaking single in the eighth, as the Chicago Cubs beat the Montreal Expos 8-6. Cubs 8 Expos 6 mmmmmmm Chicago fell behind 5-0, but three RBIs from Mark Grace and Sammy Sosa's three-run dinger turned the tide This was on a night when the Expos took a 5-0 lead but starter Mark Gardner was blitzed for six runs in the fourth, including Sammy Sosa's three-run homer. Grace's game-winning blow came on a 3-2 pitch with men on second and third and two out. "I felt good during the whole at- bat in the eighth that I would get a hit if I didn't walk," Grace said. "Dennis Martinez got me out in one of those situations Monday so this night, it was my turn.

"Sometimes, they walk me in those situations and pitch to Hawk (Andre Dawson) and sometimes, they pitch to me. As soon as I hit it, I knew right off it was two runs, I didn't cream it but I had enough on it." With Dawson coming up behind Grace, Expos manager Felipe Alou elected to have Bill Sampen (0-4) pitch to Grace rather than walk him to load the bases. "I was trying to make good pitches to Grace and I didn't care if I walked him," Sampen said. "It was either one of three situations," Alou said. "Either walk him Associated Press Chicago second baseman Ryne Sandberg misses the throw as Montreal's Bret Barberie slides in with a stolen base during the second inning Tuesday in Montreal.

on four pitches, pitch to him or Expos tied the game in the seventh pitch to him badly. We decided on the third option. You hate to walk him to load the bases. "We pitched to Ryne Sandberg, the batter before, and we got him out, Sandberg has been one of the best hitters since the All-Star break. What made it tough is that Mel Rojas and John Wetteland were unavailable." After blowing the 5-0 lead, the on Larry Walker's RBI single off Chuck McElroy (4-6).

The Expos had an opportunity to go ahead in the inning, but an attempted squeeze play backfired when Bret Barberie popped the ball into a 1-5 double play. Talk about a turning point. "It really helped when they popped up that time because it kept us in the game," McElroy said.
