A Book A Day 'House of All Nations" Holds Mercenary Crew BY BRUCE CATTON By this time, probably, someone has called your attention to Cris- tlna Stead's new navel, "House or All Nations" (Simon Schuster $3) in case you have not had a com plete All-in on the book, permit this reviewer tc add his belated two-bits worth. House of All Nations" Is one of those three-decker iovcIs which con tain, as they used to say, everything out a New England boiled dinne. It is a story about the murky h.Uf- world of international finance cen tering in Paris, ii has a cast character as lung hi the morning roil-calf or the Army of Norti.ei- Virginia, and it is less a narrative than a vast, panoramic shot of densely -packed fce.ie coi torn the fragments of a dozen sturies.

The picture author isn't exactly pretty. Her world of finance is a world without scmcies ir ideals. Us batten on a facing world as cheerfully as on a one. They'tir as irresponsible and amoral crew of pirates as ever scuttled a ship, they sau-e (he decline of caollaLsm coldly as so ma i revolutionist, and then ea'm- ly l.iurc out the procii- ways in whith they can proAt by that decline. A novel of this sort vasL loosely- integrated, amorphous will be pretty hard going for some readers.

It a tribute to Miss Stead's skill that she is able, to keep her indi vidual characters from being totally lost in the shuffle. TRANSFERS First National Bank of Indiana to Charles A. Laufier, acres, Young. Mary Dicklon to Millie Dickton, i lots. Blacklick.
