Jlolding court was a guy wjjo kept referring to last week's Ivy League tennis matches. When he spoke he could lull an army to sleep, but he had a point. -We are now in the midst of a series of Senate hearings dealing with the tax support of public television. The big urgency in all of television seems to be broadening, elevating and educating the masses who presumably couldn't care less. Which brings us to what the bore was discussing.

What about the good, old-fashioned fun? A few weeks ago Imogene Coca, Sid Caesar and Carl Reiner performed in a special which recalled the entertainment riches of the past. IT ISN'T difficult to find on any commercial channel in-depth coverage of current affairs, reports on science, theater ranging from the Greek to musical comedy. In short, commercial television, if you are selective, is doing a fine job of elevating, informing, cultivating and educating. That's fine and it is aimed at and received by an audience that hardly is representative of the television-watching public. The standard of what NET Web Maps New Schedule television is today is not set by the Hall of Fame or the Telephone Hour or a beautiful adaptation of a Truman Capote short story or by Hal Holbrook demon-.

strating his thespian talents as Mark Twain. Television, instead, is five nights a week between the hours of 7 p. m. and 11 p. m.

The essence is wrapped neatly around the watching habits of the people. It is what is being fed into the living rooms from Maine to California 52 weeks out of the year. The strength and backbone of the television industry is not related to its activities in public affairs. It is forever wedded to entertainment. Tonight, when you get up from the table, turn on the dial and set a spell in front of the television set, I would venture that you are there to relax and be amused.

Daniel H. Overmyer sold 80 of his stock in the local station along with his television stations in four other cities. The sale is pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission.

Earlier, Overmyer sold his Overmyer network as a separate entity to the United Network, a group of Texas investors. The local station, meanwhile, has moved into its studios at 1150 W. Any great heights that television can climb in the field of public affairs is commendable. But it is in the area of the situation comedy and the cowboy and the detectives that television is in need of shaking up. It would be wonderful if a little, good, old-fashioned fun could be restored to the medium. New York Times News Service NEW YORK John F. White, president of the National Educational Tele-sion network, this week presented the network's station affiliates with Its 1967-68 program schedule.

Among the highlights are dramatic presentations by Thornton Wilder, Luigl Pirandello, Moliere, Jules Romains, E. M. Forster, Saki, Chekhov, Jean An-ouilh, Pinero and James Joyce.
