Again DR. L. COURTNEY JACK has wrought another masterpiece. Me! I've always been first to admit that neither my face nor my figure ever would bring me a fortune but now, by golly, I have the distinction of being a fine piece- of surgical art! My boss felt you'd be wondering how I came out of the super-overhauling job Dr. Jack performed on me at Good maritan Hospital July 31, so I'll tell you: To say I feel like $10 million is putting it mildly.

I never realized it was possible to feel so exuberantly healthy and I GANG! with 50 many missing parts which my skillful surgeon removed during the big inside job he did on my frame. Why, he connected me up better than Nature had me in the first place! And would you believe it! of my male colleagues and one No scars! a (I told that to some weisenheimer cracked: "I don't believe it! Let's IN THE LAST COLUMN before my operation I promised that I'd go scooting around the hospital corridors in a wheelchair and bring back some undercover stories to I have to let you down on that score, dear reader, for I didn't know then it'd hurt so much to sit because of one of the several operations Dr. Jack performed. However, while standing beside his bed one day I did get a heartwarming, inspiring story from a young man (also a patient of Dr. Jack's) which shall tell you another day this week.

Before I get off this postoperative spiel, I want to thank the many readers who sent me cheerful cards and letters and who called my home and office to inquire about my health. Also, I'd like to express my grateful appreciation again to those seven persons who gave me the most precious gift of all-a pint of their life's blood. They were Miss Edith Webb, Vance Schwartz, William Onie, Bob MeNabb, Willis Vance; my brother, Clarence Glassmeyer, and my husband. INCIDENTALLY, when my sweetheart of a brother reported to hospital blood bank, one of the nuns told him the hospital preferred to have blood given to patients replaced rather than to get the money for it. She then related how she had told that very thing to a male patient who had been given a pint of blood and the fellow said he didn't know anybody whom he could ask for blood.

Gently the good Sister insisted he try to think of someone as the hospital really preferred the blood to the money. She was startled to see patient suddenly become angry, hold out his arm and exclaim: "Here, take your blood back KIBITZER by Frances Tyler Pre-emptive Bid Exception Tyler Mrs. John DeWert, A. If the last card of stock is a red three, I understand that the player who draws it may not go out, but does the red three count against the player who draws it? A player may go out with 1 the last card of stock if he can legally play it, whether it is a wild card or a natural card. Red threes can never be "played." They are bonus cards. If last card of stock is a red three, the player who draws it may neither meld nor discard and play ends.

He is given credit for the 100- point bonus for the red three. South detached a card from her hand with the evident intention of discarding it. She then replaced it in her hand and selected another discard but West had already seen the first card. Can West require South to discard the first card? No, unless North had also seen the card. A card is discarded when it is placed on the discard pile or held in such position that the player's partner can see its face.

The Kibitzer will answer questions on any card game. Enclose a stamped envelope for a personal reply. While pre-emptive bids usually are not made on hands with ter than two and a half honor tricks, or more than 10 points, there are some exceptions to this general rule, just as there are to all rules. The deal below is an illustration. NORTH 8-9 6 3 2 H-A QJ 84 D-7 6 C-Q 2 WEST EAST 5-10 -None H-7 6 3 H-9 5 D--K QJ 104 D--A 9852 C-10 8 6 4 c-AKJ753 SOUTH SAKQJ8754 H-K 10 2 3 c-9 North and South were vulnerable and South, the dealer, opened the bidding with one spade.

West passed and North bid two hearts. East bid three diamonds and South jumped to four spades. West bid five diamonds, North and East passed and South bid five spades which was passed around to East who bid six diamonds. South bid six spades and all passed. With a singleton in both minor suits, South should have reached the logical conclusion that East and West could have a good sacrifice in one of these suits, and should have opened the bidding with four spades in an effort to make it as difficult as possible for opponents to enter the bidding.

It is doubtful that East would have bid five diamonds over a four -spade bid but by opening at one spade South gave East and West a chance to "find" themselves. The bid of six spades was one too many. TOURNAMENT WINNERS At the Post Mortem Club: Mrs. H. S.

An observer sympathized with Haggerty: "I'm glad I'm not you!" The harried Haggerty retorted: "I'm glad I'm not myself sometimes!" THAT APRON LOOK: While window shopping in another city recently, Mrs. Lucius H. Riggs and two companions stopped before a clever window display consisting of stunning cocktail, dinner and theater, hats and many clocks their hands set after five.

A artistic sign noted simply: "For after five, you will wear Without so much as an oh or ah over the glamorous headgear, Mrs. Riggs chuckled: "After five, I'm fixing supper!" COVER-UP GIRL: A pretty career girl I know went into a downtown store and bought a red-flannel nightgown that had a hood to match. When the saleswoman handed over the package, she smiled: "Are you wearing on Halloween?" The career girl tried to hide her embarrassment. She thought she had made a horrible mistake and got into the wrong department. She glanced furtively about and was reassured when she noted she was in the lingerie section.

At this point, the saleswoman added brightly that another customer had bought similar red nightgown to wear as a Halloween costume. But the damage was done. The girl took the gown home but she keeps thinking how silly she must look in it if it could be mistaken for Halloween garb. Perhaps, it's this poor sales psychology that has made it necessary for the store to slash the price of those red gowns in half!
