BY MICHAEL AAcLEOD Enquirer Film Critic If you were to graft "My Dinner With Andre" onto a romantic comedy, you might come up with 'Can She Bake A Cherry Pie?" The clash between logic and intuition that "Andre" blended over coffee and Amaretto is brought out in a lighter way with this movie, mainly through its stream-of-con-sciousness heroine, Zee. There's an old saying that time Is nature's way of keeping everything from happening all at once. It's a practical arrangement, but it doesn't apply to Zee, who sees life and its contradictions in a kind of single, concurrent blur.

She's like a radio with every station tuned in, the kind of disarming, childlike soul who'll stop on a street corner and interrupt a companion to demand: "Look at all the colors!" Or she'll second-guess her own pen-siveness: "I'm not thinking about that. Why do I think I'm thinking about that?" You've known people like this: you think they are absolutely crazy until you realize they are simply bypassing the usual travel arrangements and their consciousness is operating on warp drive. WHEN ZEE'S husband leaves her, she walks the streets of Manhattan's Upper West Side in a self-absorbed daze, and winds up at a sidewalk cafe. Her tears attract the attention of Eli, a self-absorbed middle-aged bachelor, and the relationship tha sprouts up between them is a case study of opposites attracting. He is logical to the extreme when she starts talking about being depressed, he lectures her about hormones and ovulation; when they finally make love, he Movie Review Ir's rhe peak of rhe season and rhaf means rhar fishermen from Puger Sound, Norway and rhe Day of Fundy's icy warers are unloading rheir precious carch every day.

It's a scientific experiment, he explains to her, to find out which woman in his life excites him the most. In a charming turn of phrase, he tells Zee that he hasn't had a steady girlfriend for years, but has been indulging in "miscellaneous relationships." After a brief, thoughtful moment, Zee asks him: "Do you go the bed with these miscellanea?" All this is couched in a movie whose sweet insoucience masks its bitter undercurrent.

"Can She Bake A Cherry Pie?" manages to be persistently upbeat, even though it's an exploration of one of the crazier juggling acts performed by the human animal-being manipulative and loving at the same time. YOU MIGHT suspect that the title of this movie is some ironic feminist statement, but it's actually from an old song that is repeated throughout the movie: Oh where has she gone, billy boy, billy boy? Oh where has she gone, darling billy? That one. Karen Black, who may be the most sorely neglected and underrated of our great American actresses, is operating on instinct as Zee it's a thoughtless perform- ance, in the best sense of that word. Like her character, Black never stops to check her bearings: she's flying on instruments here, much as she did in her role as a neurotic country singer in "Nashville." Michael Emil is a revelation as Eli; the way he blends pseudo-hipness with naivete is reminiscent of some of Woody Allen's comicneurotic film portraits. The movie is by an independent filmmaker, Henry Jaglom, who filmed on a tight budget and initially opened the movie at a single the 68th Street Playhouse, in New York.

It has the look of a film that was made on an impulse, and somehow that makes it all the more effective. You can tell that the street scenes in Manhattan were done without extras, with just the usual sidewalk traffic floating by.
