Baltimore, October 29 (AP) The weather which dangled a cloud of uncertainty over the Pimlico Special all week, finally cleared today a few hours before five colts were named to compete in the $25,000 classic, and it appeared that three and possibly four would go to the post tomorrow. A heavy favorite in the early odds was Greentree Stable's Shut Out, tenth largest money winner of all time and Ihe leading three-year-old of last season. Shut Out had been regarded as a doubtful starter all week, because of the condition of the track. SLIDE RULE IN. Named overnight to run against Mrs.

Navy Encounter Bertelli's Final And That's Likely To Fire Irish To Their Best. BY HAROLD CLAASSEN. New York, October 29-(AP) Offering you these football selections but not guaranteeing that they will approximate last week's offerings in which 30 results of 35 games (disregarding ties) were forecast correctly: Notre Dame over Navy: The year's biggest game to date and indications are that 80,000 fans will be in the Cleveland stands.

The game is Bertelli's farewell and that's likely to fire the Irish to their very best which they will have to be. Army over Pennsylvania: Penn's attack is one of the most versatile In the country but Army's speed and depth of reserves should break the Cadet Franklin Field jinx. Some Xavier Is Going Against Strong Foe Today When It Takes On Baldwin Wallace Club As Coach Ray Watts's Baldwin- Wallace Yellow Jackets have piled up 70 points to 40 for the opposition in five games to date, it is expected that Coach Clem Crowe will order his lusketeers to use passing attack technique as soon as they get their hands on the pigskin when they face the Berea, Ohio. eleven today at the Xavier Stadium at 2:33. The B-W squad arrived Friday Associated Press Wirephoto.

Byron "Whizzer White, Wellington, former Rhodes scholar, All-American and pro football player, is now a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) and PT boat officer in the South Pacific. He left the Yale Law School in May, 1 942, to join the Navy. He played for the University of Colorado and graduated from there in 1938. This photograph came from Vella Lavella. SMITH War Gives Chance To Stagg with the ball.

Smith is booked at fullback. The Jackets opened their season against University of Rochester, which has a powerful club this year. Rochester annexed the contest, 14-6. Then B-W triumphed, 19-6, over Casi, and on the following week took Wooster into camp, 25-7. Ohio Weslc yan's eleven wasn't strong enough to stop the Jackets, with a 13-6 decision going to the Wattsmen.

The Yellow Jackets tied Bowling Green, 7-7, last Saturday. Coach Crowe's boys are familiar with the kind of talent represented by Bowling Gvecn, for the upstaters were guests of the evening for the opener in Xavier's wartime football calendar. For Xavier, Crowe is pinning some hopes on Joe Sioufe, the rabbit-like back who has showed fine form in recent games and in practice sessions. Bob Miller and Bob Bamberger Hie expected to alternate at quarter, Al Kastner will pcrfoim at full, with Sioufe and Dick Cronin geared at halves, rrobablc lineups: 70,000 fans saved their cash to see this game. Georgia Tech over Duke: Because of Navy transfer, neither coach likely will know his exact lineup until the kickoff although Tech has earlier knowledge that Mutt Manning, captain and center, and Tackle Willie Smith would be available.

At least 40,000 Dixie fans will be present. MAY DRAW 40,000. Southern California Over CaliforniaThe Trojans did it earlier in the season, 7-0, but that won't keep 40,003 fans from the game. W. E.

And suddenly the newspapers and the magazines and the newsreeis discovered him, and swooped down on Stockton for stories and pictures as they had done years and years ago. It left a warm glow, yet there was something ironic about it all, and just a little humorous, as Lonnie knew he was the same man he had been the last 11 years.

The difference was that he had a winning big-time football team. Irish Losing Five; Bertelli Is In Group Cleveland. October 29 (AP) Notre Dame University athletic of ficials received official notification today that Quarterback Angelo Bertelli and four other players en rolled in the United States Marine Corps Reserve are ordered to reporl Novembcrl for training at Parris Island, S. thus confirming previous speculation that Saturday's clash with Navy would be their last for the Irish. The other four players are Ray Kuffell, second-string left end; Ray Davis, second-team left halfback; Ed Trumpet-, third- string right end, and Reserve Quar terback Al Skat.

UNBEATEN LIST Due To Be Reduced As Sixteen Grid Leaders Will See Action Today. Purdue Should Down Badgers, But Fort Riley May Give Seahawks Tough Time. New York, October 29 (AP)- Thc shrinkage in the ranks of tht country's 16 untied, unbeaten foot ball teams will be terrific this week end with four clubs all with clean records tangling in a pair of game3. Notre Dame, the country's No. team by virtue of five lopsided tn-umphs, opposes Navy, likewise win ner of five straight, in Cleveland before an expected throng of 80,000.

Philadelphia will be host to 70,000 for the Penn-Army contest, involving undefeated outfits. Purdue, which has won six in a row, should have little difficulty with Wisconsin, but the Iowa Seahawks, even though their officer- players will see action, probablv will have a difficult afternoon with Fort Riley, a 13-to-13 equal of Great Lakes last week. BEAT CALIFORNIA. Southern California, not only unbeaten but unscored upon as well, has a return engagement with California, a team it defeated 7-0 earlier in the year. Tulsa, which has gotten better in each of its four winning appearances, is booked against Southwestern of Texas, one of the country's better clubs until its starting lineup was all but wiped out by naval graduations.

Colorado College is idle, as is Franklin and Marshall, while Ran dolph Field, Texas, goes international by meeting the University of Mexico in San Antonio. Washing ton again meets a service club, this time the Second Air Force Flyers. All those contests have at least one unbeaten participant, but there will be other top-flight games as well. Duke invades Georgia Tech, with the lineup in each case a mystery because of Navy transfers; North Carolina mixes with North Carolina State; Michigan turns Bill Da ley loose for the last time against Illinois, and Minnesota opposes Northwestern. INDIANA AT OHIO.

What likely is the year's best all-civilian duel is on the docket at Columbus, Ohio, with "Hunchy' Hoernschemeyer and his Indiana mates tackling Ernie Parks and the remainder of the Buckeyes. The Eastern menu includes Brown vs. Princeton, Colgate vs. iioiy Cross Columbia at Cornell and Dartmouth at Yale. Rochester, which opened its season on September 11, closes it Saturday against Case.

Midwestern fans also have Denver at Marquette, Iowa State at Oklahoma in an important Big Six fray, and Pittsburgh vs. Carnegie Tech in an intracity affair. Texas Tech resumes action against Rice and the Texas Aggies are heavy favorites over Arkansas in Southwestern games, while March Field takes on St. Mary's Pre-Flight and UCLA hopes for a win over San Diego Naval. Texas mixes with a weak but stubborn SMU eleven.

The South also has Wake Forest vs. Clemson, Virginia and VMI, Camp Davis vs. Camp Lejeune and Greenville Air Base playing Mary land. Xavier's nonshaving Musketeers will get their fifth opportunity this afternoon to ring up their first triumph of the campaign. But it's an outside chance at 'the best, as their opponents, the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace College, only last week played a seven-all tie with Bowling Green College, which knocked off the Muskies, 40-0, in the season's opener at Xavier Stadium, But the game should be interesting from one angle, at least, it will give followers of Professor Crowe's civilians an opportunity to judge how much the boys, mostly freshmen, have improved since the opener.

Indiana Over Ohio: Two of the country's best all-civilian outfits tanglinj before 25,000 with Hunchy Hoernschemeyer and his Hoosiei botshots getting the edge over Dean Sensanbaugher and Ernie Parks. Northwestern Over Minnesota: Another ex-Gopher, this time it is Herman Frickey, to spoil the day for Minnesota. Dartmouth Over Yale: Don Kasprzak's passing to be more ef fective than Ray Scussel's running in a tray that will lure 25,000 to the Bowl. Georgia Pre-Flight Over Tulane: Pat Harder and Steve Filipowicz Ioa. XAVIER.

Irish Two-Touchdown Choke Over Unbeaten Navy Today BY WHITNEY MARTIN.

New York, October 29 (AP) The old man and his missus must have been having many a quiet chuckle these fall evenings as they sat in cozy comfort in their Stock ton, home, and you can jus1, hear Mis. Stagg saying: "Lonnie, here's another nice piece for your scrapbook. Land sakes, we'll have to get another new one before long." And his mind probably drifted back over the last 11 years since the University of Chicago let him out as having outlived his useful ness. And the public at large, if it thought of him at all, thought of him as a weary old man tucked away at the College of the Pacific and living in the past as he puttered around trying to teach a little group of fresh-water college boys how to play football. The peaceful life was rudely interrupted by war, ana one day the-Navy announced it was taking over certain schools for training purposes, and that its Navy and Ma rine trainees would be allowed to compete in varsity athletics.

College of Pacific was on the list. and suddenly there dropped down on Stockton a group of husky young men, and in the group were many football players. Many good football players, the likes of which he hadn't had under his wing since those days years and years ago at Chicago when his Ma roons were a power in the football world. So much so that the head line: "Stagg fears Purdue" became something of a standing joke, as the Maroons didn't need to fear anyone in those days. Blessed with this windfall of sturdy, football-trained youths the Indiana-Owned Thoroughbred Is Overlooked, Paying 6-1 Odds Slow Oval Prevails.

FECIAL DISPATCH TO THE EXQCIRFJll. Louisville, October 29 Form players found the going rough at Churchill Downs again this after noon. Several spectacular finishes featured the sport. The track was improved somewhat from the three-day drenching, but it was slow and spotty. One of the thrilling finishes came with the Bonny Castle Purse, a mile trip that served as the fifth event and it resulted in victory for C.

N. Finch's Brown Mate, which led from soon after the start. A head separated him from Bro- lite Farm's Sweeping Dream, with Mrs. George C. White's Hasty Kay, a 4 to 6 choice, third, another head farther back.

Only five ran the eight furlongs. in which Brown Mate was clocked in 1.40 45. Hasty Kay chased the winner to the last stages where she tired and Sweeping Dream, who was sent through on the in side, wore her down. CREW HORSE WINS. S.

I. Crew, Cincinnati patron. who furnished a pair of winners yesterday, had Darby Ducat carry nis colors to the sixth straight surprise when he was a front running winner of the sixth contest. Swain was the runner-up and Caumsett finished third. Willie Morrissey, who handled Al Kern, was astride Darby Ducat and this three-year-old daughter of Flares- Flying Gold made it three straight victories for the current session.

Al Kern, a son of Morvich and Sister Donna, scored his first victory much to the delight of his small following for a $2 ticket was worth $211. The biggest surprise of tho meeting resulted in the Bloom-field Purse, Fourth event. He just lasted to hold a nose margin over Clco, a fielder, and the latter was a nose over Talk Over. dim and Gay, a sister of the ill-fated Omathon, making her first start, opened the program with a front running and surprise victory over Laiksong. CATTA1N RUTH WINS.

Captain Ruth led throughout the six and one-half furlongs of the see-on race, with Huracon second and Count Traumer third. Jack K. was a lukewarm favorite. Easy Quero lasted to account for the seven-furlong third race, witu Dog Blessed, the favorite, well beaten. Maggie Jane, a field horse, was second and Ring Master came from well back to finish third.

Nineteen of 54 eligibles were named for Saturday's renewal of the Shawnee Park Handicap at Churchill Downs. In the event they all face the starter, 17 of them will from the combined 12 and six stall gates and two on the outside. As this seven furlong dash, carrying $2,500 in added money, starts from the chute, it is impossible to combine the two gates without eliminating one stall and this one will be pulled into the infield, this will give room for two or possiby three horses outside of the stalls. The Shawnee also has been a popular autumn fixture, large fields prevailing in the past two runnings. It is the belief of many that the appeal ance of Hyman Friedberg's Harriet Sue among the entries will cause a number of withdrawals.

Winner of two laces here and one of the leading performers on the major Chicago circuit, Harriet Sue, a daughter of Bull Lea, will shoulder the top weight of 119 pounds. The stakes will serve as the sixth number and in the event of 19 starters, it will gross $3,720. Second money is $500, third $250 and fourth $125. FIFTH VICTORY Goal Of Wolverines In Battle With Illinois Today 'Tis Farewell For liill Daley And PN'guIman. Champaign, 111..

October 29 (AP) Beaten only by Notre Dame, Michigan's Wolverines are on the trail of their fifth football victory tomorrow against undermanned, civilian Illinois, but they'll say farewell to Battering Bill Daley and Merv Pregulman after the game, when the boys leave for additional Marine training. Their eyes on a probable share of the Western Conference title with Purdue, the Wolverines are lopsided favorites. Daley, who played three years for Minnesota before being transferred to Michigan, and Elroy Hirsch, a transplanted Wisconsin Badger, are the big guns in the Michigan attack, which reached its peak last week in a 49-6 rout of Minnesota. Daley is second among conference scorers with 26 points in two league games and Hiisch is third with 24 points. Evanston, 111., October 29 (AP) It's the last game this season for eight Northwestern V-12 football men, including four regulars, when the Wildcats meet Minnesota to morrow before a home-coming crowd expected to hit the 30,000 mark.

The department first string players are Fullback Don Buffmire, Center Joe Partington, Tackle Ray Vincent and Halfback Herman Frickey, a former Gopher. Five other former Minnesota players also are due to see action in the Northwestern lineup. DECISION TO ZIVIC. Chicago, October 29 (UP) Fritzie Zivic pounded out a ten-round decision over young Bobby Richardson of Cleveland tonight before 9,000 fans at the Chicago stadium, The name of Miller, like that with Notre Dame. Latest member is Creighton Miller, seventh of the South Bend.

His father, Harry, was captain of the 1909 team and four uncles followed Don, Gerald, Walter and Ray. Then came Creighton's brother, Tom, and now Notre Dame has Creighton himself. Don, by the way, was one of the immortal Four Horsemen. should entertain the 20,000 spectators but ruin the day for the Gieenies. Louisiana State Over Texas Christian: Navy transfers removed i four regulars and three subs from 'the TCU roster and Steve Van Euren still is operating for the Tigers.

Washington over Spokane Ail Force: The Huskia to continue among the unbeaten elevens. CRUSADERS RICKED Holy Cross over Colgate: The Crusaders' wealth of backfield material to decide. Michigan over Illinois: Even with the expected let-down following the Minnesota game, Michigan should have enough to win here. Texas over Southern Methodist: The Longhorns have it. Cornell over Columbia: Everything happens to Columbia this year, except victory.

Now Coach Lou Little is sick abed and won't be at Ithaca to guide his Lions. Tulsa over Southwestern: This one would have been a thriller had Southwestern retained its Navy stars. Purdue over Wisconsin: Badger foes have scored 109 points in the last three games and the deluge doesn't stop this week. Iowa Pre-Flight over Fort Riley: The Seahawks' officers get back Into this one. Princeton over Brown: Brown's Navy losses and Doc Savage's injury should tip this one toward he Tizers.

The dope and the odds favor Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish tangle with the Middies of Uncle Sam's Naval Academy today at Cleveland. But there is a school of thought that thinks the Irish may be in for the surprise of their lives. "John Whelchel," explained one such believer, "is a great guy for rigging up a defense for one game. He isn't too fancy on attack, but he knows all the answers on defense. Remember what he did to Army last fall when everybody was conceding that Army had one of its greatest teams.

This year, he has set his guns for Notre Dame. That's the big one he wants. The result may be a tight, evenly fought defensive dr.el, and if the Middies get a break or two they may come through with the biggest upset of the season." Stanley Frank, one of New York's better sports columnists wound up and took quite a belt at Branch preliminary to reappointing Lippy Dodgers. Said Frank: "The Reverend Rickey, who can Cleveland, October 29-(AP) The professional bettors established Notre Dame tonight as a two-touchdown favorite over Navy in the undefeated elevens' clash before a sellout crowd of in neutral Cleveland stadium tomorrow, but the Middies" coach, Captain John Whelchel, declared "We didn't conic up here for the ride." The weatherman promised temperatures in the sixties, accompanied by weather as dry as the tonsils of many visiting customers. They learned liquor is rationed in Ohio, that belated deliveries from distilleries left empty shelves at "half of the state stores and caused sparodic shortages in supplies of by-thc-drink vendors.

Hotels were jammed. The game was such a sellout that Ohio will enter the game with a revised lineup. Ray Stackhouse will replace Russ Thomas at right tackle, Matt Brown will start at quarterback in place of Red Williams, and Paul Maltinsky, third-string center a week ago, will take over for the injured Gordon Appleby. a crowd of 25,000 was anticipated for the contest. This sly campaign of obfuscation was for the purpose of getting maximum mileage in publicity from a story which, strictly speaking, was no story at all since the Reverend always knew the denouement. In this interview Crowe said there would be a meeting in a few days to thrash out the matter. Last night Crowe said there would be no meeting and that Xavier would go through with its schedule.

Public Hi Teams Play Twin Bill Tonight; Maroons Face Reds, Withrow Meets Eagles Columbus, Ohio, October 29 Coach Alvin "Bo" McMillin failed for the first time in 10 years to mention his "pore l'il boys" tonight as he brought nis nign-scoring Indiana Hoosiers to town for tomor row's Western Conference battle with Ohio State's crippled "Baby Bucks." With three Ohio State regulars on the injured list, Indiana ruled the favorite to grab its first victory over the Buckeyes since 1937. The Hoosiers have rolled up 160 points to 41 for their opponents in winning three games, losing one and tying two this season. The Bucks, on the other hand, have lost four of their five games and will be after their first conference win. Efforts by Coach Paul E.

Brown and his staff to get his injured players in shape and lengthy concentration on passes indicate the Buck: will "shoot the works" to drag down an upset. "We need this one," said Brown. "It's our first meeting with an all-civilian outfit in a month and the first in which we've had anything like a chance. Our scouts tell us they've been pointing for us for three weeks and coasting while we've been battling physically superior teams Great Lakes, Purdue and Northwestern." Bud Weber, one of the two letter- men on the Maroons Al Di Garmo being the other also is back in uniform, an injured leg having kept him out of the lineup all season. Weber, who alternated with De Gar mo at quarterback last year, is slated for duty at an end, while Garmo now holds down right guard.

The Walnut Hills-Withrow game also looms as a thriller, especially since the Eagles will be out to avenge a 12-0 defeat by Western Hills last week. Western Hills had the good fortune of keeping the Eagles' "truch-down twins," Captain Jack Beyers-dorfer and Nate Harnett, bottle.i up most of the game and Withrow probably will have to do likewise if the Tigers are to maintain their record of never having lost a football game to the Eagles. The affair is a red letter event for Public High followers for it brings together four of the top teams in this section and should provide an Inkling as to one of the claimants to the mytnicai city title. From Miami came the report that while they had an offer to play with the Patterson Field All Stars in the Dayton University Stadium on that day they would do nothing to cancel the Xavier game.
