GRINDING £, MIXING All, II FERTILIZER ROY AW 864 -7731 BULK DELIVERY GRAIN BANKING-WE GRAIN "Eeny Meeny" I School Calendar By Mr. Koopman A high school student with plans to attend a colege, junior college or nursing school has re quired entrance tests to take and forms to fill out and fees to pay and transcripts to be sent. College entrance tests are de signed to help the college decide which students have the best chance to succeed in college When combined with a student rank in class, college can make reasonable predictions based on past performances of their own students. College entrance tests also have the advantage of comparing the student on a national basis with others planning to at' tend college.

Since a aver age in one high school does not mean the same as a average in another high school, a score on a national test can give more standardized comparison. It is all calculated to take the "eeny meeny" out of admissions pro cedures. The two college entrance tests are the A. C. T.

(American Col lege Test) and the S. A. T. (Scho lastic Aptitude Test). Most colleges, junior colleges and nursing schools in Iowa require the A.

C. T. On a national basis, there are about an equal number of colleges requiring one or the other. The best way to prepare for such tests is to read and then read some more. While there are books for sale, claiming to serve as cram courses for these tests, there is no real value in such an approach, Information regarding test dates, registration forms and deadlines and fees for these tests can be acquired in the guidance office.

While seniors can take these tests during the first semester of their senior year, it is also possible for juniors to take it late in their junior year. There is no one best time to take the A. C. T. or S.

A. T. There is also another test designed for juniors not yet sure about attending college. This test is being given this October 25th at 9:00 a. m.

It is called the P. S. A. T. (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test).

This test does not fulfill any college entrance requirement. But it does give those students taking it a chance to see how they compare with others in the country planning to attend college. It is also a useful preparation for later entrance tests. More information can be gotten in the guidance office. But, while these tests have a useful purpose, they still are not the most important predictor of success in college.

Past success is the best predictor of future success. This means that a students high school grades and rank in class are the best predictors of college success. Thus success breeds success. Good grades lead to good test scores. A student, then, can greatly influence his own chances of being admitted to higher levels of education.

The decision of which college, junior college or nursing school to attend may be the only "eeny meeny" choice left. Wednesday, October school; Home Ec and Area 7:30 p. m. band practice; National FFA Convention in Kansas City; 7:00 p. play practice.

DO YOU KNOW LEFT FROM RIGHT? certain relationships in space will be meaningless. As he learns to read, many of the letters shown him will have no basis for being different. The only difference between and is direction; the only difference tw "saw" and "was" is direction, etc.

To this child, ho direction exists so no difference exists between the two letters or words. It is fruitless to try to teach this child the complex acivities involved in reading as long as he lacks the basic skill of internal direction. Does reading still sound simple to you? Some of the activities used to develop these skills are the balance beam, balance board, rebound tumbling, (trampoline), stunts and. (Duck walk, Elephant walk, bear crawl) some chalkboard games. By Mrs. V. Lammert All movement develops basic- ly from the primary muscle ac tion called posture or "sense of Posture is an important act of the brain and muscles Muscle groups work together and against each other so that the body may keep its center of gravity (stand up straight). The muscle movements are very basic and are the most rigid in the body. There are two reasons for posture being important.

First, it acts as a starting point, or point of reference, to the earth's surface and our surroundings. Second is safety. The muscles adjust to keep balance. For instance, try leaning ahead until you are at the point falling. Automatic muscle action will cause you to move your feet in such a way as to keep your balance.

Movement is learned and results from the stretching and contraction of the muscles. Laterality, or the ability to tell right from left within the body, is the internal awareness of the two sides of the body and its differences. Balance comes from this awareness. One must learn to operate one side against the other. Even after the child has learned the two sides, he has the problem of keeping their relationship straight.

The development of laterality right from left, is very important because it permits a person to keep things straight around him. After a child has developed laterality in his own body and is aware of the left and right side of him, he is ready to think about these outside the body, or in space. This is If the directionality has not developed from laterality, then HOUSEHOLD AUC1 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 162 FRONT ST. POSTVILLE, SALE TIME 1 :00 P. M.
