STATE OF IOWA SCHOLARSHIPS The State of Iowa Scholarship Program was established in 1965 for the benefit of Iowa students attending colleges within the state. Designed to encourage good students of limited means to continue their education, this program has helped 1734 Iowans to meet college expenses.

Awards are based on ability and financial need and are renewable for the sophomore year, if the student makes satisfactory grades and continues to need financial assistance. There are two types of awards monetary and honorary. Monetary scholarships range from $100 to $800, depending upon the student's need and the tuition at his chosen college. Awards may be used only for tuition and fees at approved Iowa colleges. Honorary scholarships are awarded to applicants who qualify academically but do not need financial assistance or do not plan to enter an approved college.

A minimum of two awards will be granted to students from each Iowa county which have qualified applicants. Eligibility Requirements. An applicant for a state scholarship must: (1) be a citizen of the U. S. and a resident of Iowa for 12 months immediately preceding the date of enrollment.

(2) be graduated from an approved high school before the end of August 1970. (3) plan to enroll as a freshman at an approved college, university, vocational technical school or professional nursing school in Iowa. (4) take the American College Tests (ACT) on any regular test date from October 1968 to November 1969, listing the State of Iowa Scholarship code number "1376" on the answer sheet when the test is taken. (5) be a person of good moral character. PRESS PICK OF THE WEEK JIM BRANDT By Greg Groth In the first conference loss of the season the Pirates played the Sumner Aces.

Although the Pirates lost, there were a few standouts for PHS. Jim Brandt, who was selected as lineman of the week by the coaching staff, plays tackle on both the offensive and defensive squads. Many times he was called on to block Sumner's all-state Nelson Converse doing a 'very good job. Jim felt that the team played a very good game through the first three but a few bad breaks put the momentum in the hands of the Aces. He also said that he feels that the team has a good chance to go the rest of the season undefeated.

Jim will attend Iowa State University next fall and would like to play football. it Editorial Bq Larry Landsgard I don't know how many people have stopped to realize it, but our school' has a very active Pep Club this year. I think the credit should be given where credit is due, and our p6p club truly deserves recognition. P. H. S.

has long needed something to create school spirit and these pepsters have done a real fine job in this respect. It takes determination to accomplish something, and these fellow Pirates really have displayed it. They've gone to a lot of work to try and convey the meaning of spirit to the student body. All the posters we see in the halls, are not for decoration, each one has it's own message to get across. Another way in which the pep club has.

developed the spirit of the school is by selling beanies. Two hundred-fifty of the hats were sold within a matter of days, and from what I hear they would still be able to sell more. These were just a few examples of how one group of kids, can get a whole school involved in something, if they just put their minds to it. And this group has truly done this. Keep up the good work.

LITTLE PIRATES ROLL AGAIN The eighth grade football team opened with a strong attack against the Valley Tigers in the first half. Putting on a fine display of blocking and tackling gave them a half time lead of 16 to six. The scores were tallied by a 25 yard run by Kedric Groth and a 50 yard pass play by Kim Landt to David Harris. 1969 POSTVILLE (Iowa) HERALD 3 point conversions were added by Craig Converse on a quarterback keep and Kedric Groth on a sweep. Halftime found the Valley Tigers loading up on Tiger fuel and completely dominating the third period of play. At the end of the third period the score was 20 to 16 in favor of Valley and they were getting stronger by the play. The fourth period found Postville having to display their poise and talent to come from hind with a much needed score. The score was obtained by passes) from Landt and O'Hara to Craig Harberts.

This moved the ball within scoring distance and brutal runs by Groth and O'Hara carried the ball across for a touch- dow with O'Hara getting the credit. The game ended with a 22 to 20 score in favor of Postville. More School News On Page Four. Livestock Loans WINNER OF SAVINGS BOND: Gene Stadtmiller POSTVILLE STATE BANK 1872 1969 MEMBER F.
