He was 77. Memorial services were held Saturday at Petminglun Funeral Homo in San Marcos, Texas, for Hughson, who died of kidney failure at Central Texas Medical Center. Hughson was born in Buda, Texas, and attended the University of Texas. He won 96 games and lost 54 for the Red Sox between 1941 and 1949. Before arm trouble prematurely ended his career in 1949, Hughson made the American League All-Star team three times.

He won 22 games in 1942 and another 20 in 1946. Known as a great clutch pitcher, he never lost a game by a 1-0 score, but won seven games by that score. Like the Red Sox 1 current Texas star, Roger Clemens, Hughson wore number 21 and was widely feared by American League batters. Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio said Hughson was one of the toughest pitchers he ever faced. One of the more memorable moments of Hughson's career came on Sept.

13,1946, when he clinched the pennant for the Red Sox by shutting out the Cleveland Indians 1-0. He retired before the 1950 season and later became a real estate developer. PICNIC!
