FROM ENQUIRER WIRES Steve Busby, once the ace of the Kansas City pitching start, is priming himself for a last-chance opportunity with the St Louis Cardinals. The 31-year-old right-hander released by the American League champion Royals last fall, will pitch In Saturday's exhibition opener at St. Petersburg, Fla against the New York Mets following starting rookie Andy Rlncon. Between 1973 and 1975, Busby won 56 games Including a 22-vlcto-ry output In 1974 before experiencing shoulder problems. He underwent rotator-cuff surgery In July 1976 "and ever since then, I've had to learn all over again," Busby said Wednesday.

"All I can do now Is get myself In the best possible shape to make it here," he said. If he fails in his comeback with the Cardinals, Busby Indicated he'll return to his business interests in Kansas City. ELSEWHERE IN exhibition baseball: Cy Young Award winner Steve Carlton will be the starting pitcher Friday when the Philadelphia Phillies open their 1981 exhibition season against the New York Mets. He was the Dodgers' top reliever in 1978 when he recorded 22 saves and 1.94 earned run average but was unable to pitch for the most part the past two years.

Venezuelan right-hander Luis Sanchez finally made an appearance In the California Angels' training camp at Palm Springs, two weeks late and nearly forgotten. Sanchez was purchased by the Angels last month from Vera Cruz of the Mexican League, but visa difficulties and the death of a nephew delayed his arrival until Wednesday. A 6-foot-2, 170-pounder who returned from a three-year layoff after an operation to post a 14-9 record with a 2.03 earned-run average last season with Vera Cruz, Sanchez is making his second bid at a major league Job. Originally drafted In 1972 by Houston and dealt In 1975 to Cincinnati in a trade Involving Joaquin Andujar, Sanchez, who is now 27, dropped out of baseball following arm surgery In 1976. Mark Brouhard's two-run home run in the eighth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 Cactus League victory over the Cleveland Indians at Tucson, Ariz.

Brouhard, who hit .232 in 45 games for Milwaukee last season, lined a 1-2 pitch off loser Mike Stanton, 0-1, over the left-field fence to overcome a 5-4 deficit The blast also scored Ted Simmons, who had walked. Dwlght Bernard picked up the victory, hurling two perfect Innings. Richie Hebner had four hits his second homer In five games, a double and two singles and drove In three runs, powering the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Winter Haven, Fla. Former Michigan quarterback Rick Leach, trying to win a major league Job as a non-roster player In training, hit a homer and a single.

Boston starter Dennis Eckersley gave up six hits and four runs In three Innings. Al Oliver's double and Buddy Bell's single drove In three runs in the fifth Inning to give the Texas Rangers a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Oliver's double off Mike Griffin scored Bump Wills, who had walked. Then Bell's single to center brought home Mickey Rivers, who had singled, and Oliver. Rick Honeycutt, who allowed one run in the first three innings, gained the victory.

Tommy John, the Yankee starter, allowed one unearned run in three innings and took the loss. Jack Morris pitched five innings of one-hit ball to lead the Detroit Tigers' split squad to a 9-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Sarasota, Fla. The Tigers jumped on Britt Burns, last year's American League rookie pitcher of the year, for five runs in the first two innings and led 9-1 until Wayne Nordhagen hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off rookie Bruce Robblns. A three-run homer by Tom Brookens in the second was the big hit against Burns. Kenjl Awaguchl had two triples to drive In three runs, leading the Tokyo Giants to a 7-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Orlando, Fla.

Awaguchl, an outfielder and Tokyo's leadoff man, tripled In one run off relief pitcher Jack O'Connor In the seventh and knocked in two more with a ninth-Inning triple against Wally Sarmlento. Former New York Yankee outfielder Roy White Ignited a two-run fourth inning for the Giants with a leadoff triple. Ed Miller singled In the top of the 14th inning, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Rookie Craig Landis ignited the game-winning rally with a single off Bill Laskey. Laskey, the Royals' fifth pitcher In the game, retired the next two hitters before Miller singled sharply to center.

Veteran Lee May struck out In both the 12th and 14th Innings, ending Kansas City threats. Rookie outfielder Mike Patterson's tie-breaking home run in the fourth Inning and Brian Doyle's steal of home later in the inning sparked the Oakland A's to a 6-4 victory over the Talyo Whales of Japan in an exhibition at Scotts-dale, Ariz. Mike Norrls, starting for the A's in their Cactus League opener, allowed Just one unearned run in three innings, and Craig Mlnetto shut the Whales out the next three innings to earn the pitching victory.
