"This is a long-term program and a long-term commitment." Detroit churches and community organizations are also committed to getting people involved in the program. "Detroit has been pillaged and it's time to put more effort into building neighborhoods," said the Rev.

Two have been held at Church of Our Father Missionary Baptist Church, also on the east side, where the Rev. Thomas Evans said he tries to stress the importance of home ownership to a community. "We want to be involved with this to help members of this church and community get available information so they can make decisions," Evans said.

Program participants get practical information, such as how to obtain a credit report, and useful tips on how to save money when they close on a house. But she invested two hours in the possibility and "started looking immediately." A few months later, Ward owned a three-bedroom brick house on the east side. The kids have a backyard and they are close enough to walk to school. Ward can walk to her job.

She is saving money on gas and the difference between her former rent and her current house payment is about the $15 cost of a case of pop she used to take to work every month. Ward's decision to buy came after she attended a seminar held by the Community Home Buyer's Program, a joint effort of Standard Federal Bank, General Electric Capital and the Federal National Mortgage Association. Since April 1990, the program has conducted dozens of seminars in church basements and community centers across Detroit, usually on Saturdays, sometimes on weeknights. The atmosphere is casual as bank officers explain the ins, outs, ups and downs of home buying. "We tell people buying a house is not an unrealizable dream," said George Seedorff marketing officer for Standard Federal.

Standard Federal has made 37 mortgages worth $1.8 million to program participants since it began. The effort is among the most successful being made by area lenders since 1988, when a Free Press series showed the lack of mortgage lending in Detroit and how it was a factor in the city's decline. He was the first to die of the 12 men who have walked on the moon. He gave up the search for the ark in 1986 saying it was time for others to continue the effort. Born in Pittsburgh on March 17, 1930, Mr.

(517) 463-2101 By John Castine and jim schaefer Free Press Staff Writers A 26-year-old Southfield man with a history of drunken driving was fleeing from police as fast as 50 m.p.h. on three tires and a sparking rim before he slammed into a Detroit fire truck and was killed Friday, police said.

At one point during the chase, Allen Sander Katz was going 70 to 80 m.p.h. the wrong way on Greenfield Road, Dearborn police said. Three Detroit fire fighters were slightly injured in the accident about 3 a.m. on Greenfield at 1-96. The fire fighters were returning from a run when Katz's car swerved into their lane, striking the right front.

Dearborn Police Chief Ronald De-ziel said an officer saw Katz's red 1990 Chevy Beretta weaving across west-' bound Michigan Avenue about 2:45 a.m. The officer turned on his siren and lights and tried to pull Katz over, but Katz sped north on Greenfield in the southbound lanes. The officer said oncoming motorists swerved to avoid Katz. Just south of Ford Road, Katz struck a street sign, hit a curb and blew out his right front tire. Katz returned to the right side of the street at Warren, police said.

Although the Detroit city line is at Tireman, Dearborn police continued the chase up to Chicago Road, police said. Detroit Sgt. Sammie Hall of the traffic fatality squad said a Detroit squad car nearly was hit by Katz as it exited 1-96 at Greenfield. Police followed Katz a few blocks north to a gas station at Schoolcraft, where he pulled in. As they approached, Katz sped off south.

Detroit police did not pursue. Katz then slammed into the truck, destroying it and his car, said Fire Chief Harold Watkins. Deziel said Katz was convicted of drunken driving in 1985. After a February 1990 accident, Katz was charged with drunken driving. He failed to show up in cour last month.

Robert Baker said his son, Robert crossed a rope Thursday and walked up to the cage.

The next thing he knew, a lynx had hold of his son. "It was like a flash of lightning," Baker said. The boy was treated for puncture wounds and scratches on his neck, chest and stomach. Zoo Director Ken Gregory on Friday said it was most likely that the lynx was being playful. "She is a very friendly cat," he said.
