at 5:30 This has been the first one we have had this year and we are hoping for a big turnout Bring your husband or friend and a covered dish and join us Some of the members have lost clubs Please check your golf bag to see if you have any extra ones you have found and forgotten to turn in I think our new member Janice Lewis (Mrs Larry) is going to put has been playing golf for over 20 years She has many other interests which includes church work at the irst Christian Church where she and her husband Lewis Merryman an Elizabethton attorney and present City Judge are members Mrs Merryman ds currently ser ving as vice president of the Women's ellowship She is a former president of the organization and has served many times as circle chair man She is also active in other civic organizations including the ranklin Club and the John Carter Chapter DAR in which she serves as Vice Regent Peg and Lewis are presently in volved in promoting the Great Smoky Mountains Gatlinburg three in elementary and nationally Games se for May 21 23 at Gatlin burg They are among the organizers and board members of the Scottish games and Mrs Merryman is a member of the Macarlane Clan Traveling is another one of their main hobbies She has a pleasing personality and her nature to stay busy makes her a natural for getting along and working with other people with people has been very rewarding and has brought me a great deal of satis faction through the said Mrs Merryman Peg is the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William Marsh The STAR appreciates unselfish reporting in that she receives no remuneration Sports Editor TWO UNAKA High School coaches have been transfer red to different schools for next year by the Carter Coun ty Educational Board Ronnie Hicks will be at Cloudland High School this fall and Dallas Williams is moving to Hunter Elementary School Hicks who has been coach ing a total of 14 years handled the basketball and soft ball programs at Unaka High after moving from Unaka Ele mentary where he coached and basketball He helped to start the softball program at Unaka High and led the Lady Rangers to a 22 3 record last year including conference district and regional titles before losing in the Class A state semifinals team this school year finished the season with a 20 10 record winning the conference dis trict and regional champion ships Alan Richardson who was assistant to Hicks is the softball coach this year Hicks is not sure what his new duties at Cloudland will be this fall other than teach ing Williams who resigned the head basketball coaching position following the season this year "says he will not be coaching He is a graduate of Unaka where he played basketball and also attended Lees Mc Rae and Milligan College also playing on the basketball teams at both colleges Williams replaced Sam Greenwell as head basketball coach in 1977 His teams had a 35 92 record over the five year span Greg Goulds another former high school basketball coach has been transferred from Happy Valley Middle School to Happy Valley High School for the next school year Goulds a former Warrior athlete was head basketball coach at Cloudland High School two years By BILL JENKINS STAR Staff Peggy Merryman who has been reporting the Ladies Day Golf news in a weekly Sunday column in the STAR for several years is an avid golfer and golf fan She has participated in many tournaments both locally and in the surrounding areas She plays golf at least once a week One of her top accomplishments in the golf field was winning the Peg Witherow Memorial Tournament in 1971 She is also a member of the exclusive Hole in One Club having achieved the honor in 1977 She sank the ace on the 10th hole a distance of 150 yards Peg who has been
