S. attorney in Brooklyn, also was convicted of taking a $12,500 bribe. The same verdict returned against the third defendant. racketeer Antonio (Tony Ducks) Carollo, who helped raise the bribe money. Justice Keogh, 56, turned ashen.

He leaned on a table to steady himself. The conviction means that he automatically faces disbarment as a lawyer--and the right to sit any more as a justice. He has been on the bench since January 1, 1951, and his term--at $34,500 a -was to run to the end of 1964. He will be sentenced, with his co-defendants, on July 17. Each faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine from Federal Judge Edward Weinfeld.

Space Nuclear Blast Opposed Sir Robert Watson-Watt, a pioneer in the development of radar, yesterday warned a scientific meeting against American plans to explode a nuclear device in a radiation belt that surrounds the Earth. "Even in physics, it is undesirable that technological fools should rush in where scientific angels fear to fly," he said in reference to U. S. plans to set off a nuclear in the Van Allen Belt. The Van Allen Radiation Belt is composed of ionized particles in the outer atmosphere which, surround the Earth extending a distance of 35,000 miles.

Speaking to persons at a "Scientists on Survival" soul meeting in New York, Sir Robert protested "launching a heavy-handed attack on the Van Allen Belt by methods whose consequences are beyond reasonable forecast and which might prove irreversible in the long or in the short run." Sir Robert said: "It is, in matters such as these, that this cautious Scot finds himself in severe discord with, and indeed in sharp hostility to, the brash American--or should I say, the brash Pentagonist." WORLD -WIDE Security Guards Irk De Gaulle President Charles de Gaulle neared the end of a fourday swing through Eastern France at Besancon, irritably protesting the presence of 5000 guards protecting him against any Secret Army Organization assassination attempt. With gendarmes and security police lurking behind trees, bushes and hedges all along his route, Mr. de Gaulle was reported to have snappped to aides: "'This is a superfluous piece of showmanship." But Interior Minister Roger Frey, who accompanied the President, took no chances with Mr. de Gaulle's safety. It was the biggest security force ever assigned to Mr.

de Gaulle, and followed De Gaulle discovery of another assassination plot this week, the third in less than a year. WASHINGTON U.S. Fights For Negro Teacher The government brought suit yesterday to force reinstatement of a Negro school teacher in Greene County, who it charged was fired for trying to register to vote. Atty. Gen.

Robert F. Kennedy announced filing of the suit in Federal Court in Jackson, seeking re-employment of Ernestine Denham' Talbert for the 1962-63 school year. The suit asked for an injunction to require that the Greene County School Board reinstate the teacher and offer her a teaching contract for the coming year. The suit alleged that she was dropped from employment as an apparent result of her efforts to register to vote and her testimony about those efforts in a civil rights suit. Glitter Fades Calumet City's Sin Strip Loses To Suburban Respectability CALUMET CITY, June 16 (UPI) Calumet City's "Sin Strip" was the quietest place in town today.

Also the dullest. While girls" and strip tease dancers in Washington testified of the wide open goings-on in "Cal City's" girlie joints, the business of organized vice was dragging back home on honkytonk row. "Sin Strip" is a stretch of two blocks along Calumet City's State Street just beyond the South Chicago city. limits. night, it's a blaze of neon lights flashing the charms of "Tawny Tremaine.

The Atomic Missile" and "Cynthia The Body." By day, it's a tawdry line of one and one and a half story clip joints squeezed together like a row of dominoes. The night time glitter looks very tired and very faded. And business is bad. At the Folles Bergere, hangout of 'Tawny Tremaine," four girls sat listlessly at the bar. They didn't approach the customers.

In the old days a "Cal City" customer had B-girl at his side the moment he stepped in the door. But the girls at the Folles Bergere seemed afraid to put on the hard sell. The manager of the "Show Club" paced about disconsolately, 'his hands behind his back. Every now and then he picked up a microphone and announced the latest in a string of strippers. He didn't seem to have his heart in it.

You could hear a pin drop on the bar room floor. Time was when the action on State Street was so fast and furious that the saloon owners had to use guide ropes to steer the suckers in and out. Everything was on sale on "Sin Strip" and policemen stayed away from the row. Any officer who tried to make an arrest was generally asking for a beating up. The town's reputation spread so that even now Sunday Business Complaint Filed Walter Nacey, manager of the Ontario Discount House, will face Judge Paul J.

Gilday Tuesday night in Fairfax Court on a charge of operating the store in violation of Ohio's Sunday closing laws. Hamilton County Deputy Sheriff Pat Molloy served the warrant on Mr. Nacey on a complaint filed by Mrs. Roberta White, 10657 Chelmsford Forest Park. Her accusation said store, 5245 Ridge Pleasant Ridge, was open and doing business on a Sunday.

of ling. and 1962, ford. Angel dev. tion. of June 81 a Calumet City resident is likely to get a raised eyebrow and a knowing wink anywhere in the nation when he mentions his home town.

During the 40's and 50's, Calumet City was regarded as a prime investment for the vice lords of Chicago's underworld. There was common talk that girls were recruited from as far away as Canada to work in State Street's gin mills. It appeared that nothing could be done about it and nobody really cared. What's more, the lush taxes and license fees levied on the clip joints took a burden off the shoulders of Cal City's more respectable citizens. But it was finally suburban respectability which robbed "Sin Strip" of its luster.

The change on "Sin Row" came slowly, however. The first big blow was when a crusading state's attorney, Benjamin Adamowski, began raiding the strip palaces and closing them down. Mayor Stanley Bedjer made the first motions at bringing law to the Strip, and his successor, Joseph Novak, has been stepping up the pressure. A no -nonsense police chief, Cashimir Linklewicz, took office and told the mayor "If there's any laws on the books you don't want enforced you'd better take them off, because I intend to enforce all the laws." Chief Linkiewicz has managed to close four sin row night clubs and has his eye on five or six more. Only three full fledged strip tease palaces are in full operation.

You might say that "Sin Strip" has become an economically depressed area.
