July 20, 1947 THE CINCINNATI. ENQUIRER News -Page 39 EXTINCT CAT Found In Wyoming. Fossil Is Estimated 35,000,000 Years 014-Distant Cousin Of Saber Tooth Tiger. Washington, July 19-(UP)-The scientists once more have come up with a fantastic creature out of the prehistoric past. This time it is a flesh-eating mammal with tusks, related in bone structure to the saber-tooth cats that roamed the earth some years The fossil skeleton of the longextinct animal was unearthed in the Bridger Basin of Wyoming by scientists from the Smithsonian Institution.

After intensive study a report on the animal was made Dr. C. Lewis Gazin, of vetebrate paleontology the curator, Smithsonian. Dr. Gazin described the animal about the size of a large house cat, with skull features similar to those of the saber-tooth tiger.

The saber-tooth was one of the cat ily with long curved tusks adapted to a thrusting, stabbing type of fighting. Although cat-like in bone structure, Dr. Gazin said this animal was only remotely related to the cat family. He called the creature A Machaeroides Eothen, belonging to the general race of Creodonts, from which present day flesh-eating mammals descended. The particular group to which this smallsized saber-tooth belonged became totally exinct at least 35,000,000 years ago.

Nine other countries were represented in the meeting which was held in the State Department on July 11 but no Russian envoy ever showed up.
