14 May 5, 1946 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER News Section- Page 31 COSTLY TALENT Finally Making Good In Harness Racing This Year, Gahagan Says. Victory Song, $37,000 Yearling In '44, Wins On Coast, Boosting Hambletonian Hopes. BY TOM GAHAGAN. SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE ENQUIRER. Goshen, N.

May 4-It is the history of the high-priced yearlings, both in the field of thoroughbreds and that of the trotters and pacers, that they seldom prove to be top performers. In the majority of cases, it is the low or medium priced youngsters which make good in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and other classics of the thoroughbred world, in the Hambletonian, Fox Stake and other leading features of the harness racing sport. This season the higher-priced youngsters of the harness breed have made good showings at the opening Grand Circuit meeting at the Santa Anita track and this be one of the seasons during which the abnormally high prices of the past few years may be justified. One of the winners at Santa Anita recently was the highest priced yearling in all history the standard bred. This is Victory Song, now a three-year-old, for which Mrs.

James B. Johnson of Rochester, paid $37,000 at the sale of the Walnut Hall Farm yearlings in the fall of 1944. This was more than double the price paid for a harness bred yearling previous to that time and last season it looked like a bad buy when the colt made only one start, that over a half-mile track, and finished third in the two-heat summary, in comparatively slow time. MAY BE CONTENDER. Now he has made his second try, this time on the major circuit and made good, trotting to a record of the railbirds at the California track are of the opinion that he may be dangerous factor in the $50,000 Hambletonian Stake to be raced at Good Time Park early in August.

While he is a nice individual, it was his breeding, more than anything else, that made Victory Song bring the record-breaking price when a yearling. The youngster is a son of Volomite greatest of living sires, while his dam is Evensong, one of the greatest of producing broodmares. He is a brother to the 1943 Hambletonian Stake winner, Volo Song holder of the world's race record for trotting stallions; a trotwhich many good judges believed was on his way to dethrone the trotting, champion Greyhound when was brought to an end by a broken leg, suffered on a half-mile track in his next start after having trotted mile at North Randall. Evensong also produced Twilight Song, winner of the 1937 Kentucky futurity and rated the best of the three-year-olds of that year, although off form and beaten in the Hambletonian. Date Changed For Tami's Go With Woodcock New York, May 4-(AP)-Promoter Mike Jacobs today changed the date of the Tami MaurielloBruce Woodcock fight from May 13 to May 17, the date originally assigned to the lightweight title bout involving New York champion Bob Montgomery and challenger Allie Stolz.

"May 17, a Friday, is the date I originally wanted for the Woodcock fight," Jacobs said, "but when I signed Woodcock it was already filled." Montgomery, recognized as the lightweight champion in New York, was injured in training yesterday, and the fight was indefinitely postponed. Woodcock, British heavyweight champion, now is in training at Bear Mountain, New York. ARMY TRACKMEN WIN. West Point, N. May 4-(AP) -With Herbert McKenley bettering track marks in two events, the University of Illinois team won the quadrangular track and field meet today from Army, Dartmouth and Columbia with 80 points.

Army scored Dartmouth and Columbia 3. The speedy McKenley won the 440-yard dash in 0:48.1 and the 220. in 0:20.8 in his record shattering performances. WEIMER'S BIRD WINS. H.

Weimer, 7411 Clovernook, Mt. Healthy, furnished the winner of the 100-mile pigeon race from Mitchell, to Cincinnati yesterday. A strong wind enabled the winner to travel the distance in one hour and 45 minues. Entry of Paul Adler, 5421 Lester was second, while William Clemens, 709 Mulberry, North College Hill, had the third bird. Fourth place went to John Gaston of Hamilton, Ohio.
