Alas, there are vampires. So already I've given myself away. I'll be honest: I have a strong distaste for the sight of blood, particularly when it's smeared across someone's mouth like warm chocolate. But even given a dislike of vampire movies, I will concede that "Near Dark" is styl Caleb Adrian Pasdar Mae Jenny Wright Jesse Lance Henrlksen A FeldmanMeeker Production.

And it certainly 1 has a look. Director Kath- Wright MICHAEL DOIIOLAS GLE)fi CLOSE at night; that pretty much sums it up.

In this version, Caleb spots the attractive (but mighty pale) Mae lounging around town and offers her a ride. When he demands a kiss to get her home before sunrise, she gives him one, all right. Her "family" scoops him up and, though he tries to escape, he's developed a taste for blood that draws him back. Of course, Caleb is not really one of the vampires until he makes a kill, and he's a bit queasy about that. Happily for him, his dad and little sister, knowing something is wrong, are tracking him.

Now, even if you like vampires, you know it's only a matter of time and gore before the good guys triumph. Bigelow's art background shows. "Near Dark" is visually striking, with clothing artfully arranged and shoot-outs, oil wells and sunsets beautifully photographed. It would be nice to see her talents used on something a little less gory. ryn Bigelow and co-writer Eric Red have dispensed with the Slavic and Victorian overtones of most vampire stories.

No damsels swoon in their beds, no caped counts sport slick-backed hair and thick accents. The vampires in "Near Dark" wear cowboy boots and roam the West like an earlier era's outlaws. Yes, these vampires have to sleep during the day, but motels take the place of coffins. They don't fly like bats, they steal cars. AS IN any vampire story, the plot is minimal.
