PORTLAND Mr. and Mrs. Jay Steven took their daughter, Mrs. John Opheim, Dawn and Johnny of Burt, to Iowa City Tuesday where they had their tonsils removed Wednesday. They were brought home Sunday. Dawn was taken to St. Ann hospital Wednesday because of hemorrhaging. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Steven and family were Wednesday supper guests in the Jay Steven home. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Meister took their children, Bill, Eugene, Mr. and Mrs, Dennis Meister and Mary Ann Goetz to dinner Sunday at the Johnson House in honor of the Bernard Meister's 26th wedding anniversary. Portland Social Club which was to have met Jan. 13, in the home of Jessie Miller in Algona, was cancelled as Mrs, Miller was sick with a cold. Mrs. E. C. Schwletert attended the Fort Nigh'ly Club in the home of Mrs. J. L. Miller Friday, Mf. and Mrs. Roscoe Stewart returned home Friday from China Lake, Calif, where they spent about- ten days visiting their daughter and family, the James Lees. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Fitch and Judy, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Grosser, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Harms and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hix attended the funeral of Fred Henken Thursday in Crystal Lake. Mrs. Conrad Graham, the former Sue Rasmussen and baby Wade are here for an extended visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Rasmussen, while her husband, Conrad Graham, goes to sea. He is serving on the USS Providence. Mrs. L. E. Rasmussen, sister- in-law of Mr. A. L. Rasmussen, 'and mother, Mrs. W. H. Deibler, both of Kanawha, came with Mrs. Floyd Charbonneaux to visit in the A, L. Rasmussen home Sunday. "Those who refuse to be used by God often are used by the Godless." Motes Of Servicemei VH CORPS, GERMANY- Army PFC Alan D. Schultz, 22, son of Mrs. Catherine Schultz, 410 S. Sample, Algona, qualified as expert in firing the M-14 rifle in Germany, Jan. 3. The expert rating is the highest mark a soldier can achieve in his rifle qualification test. Schultz, a mechanic in Howitzer Battery of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment's 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, entered the Army in May 1964, completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and arrived overseas the following November. He attended Whittemore high school and was employed at Martin's Garage before entering the Army. - o - USS CALVERT (APA-32) Dec. 28 - Seaman Michael C. Wickliff, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Wickliff of Route 2, Algona, completed a rest and recreational visit to the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong, while serving aboard the attack transport USS Calvert, currently on her 12th deployment with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. As a unit of Amphibious Squadron Five, operating out of San Diego, Calif., Calvert has steamed over 15,000 miles on her current tour in the Far East.
