is August 9th at 12 noon only two and a half weeks away At this point in time (to quote the recently overworked Watergate phrase) there is a serious shortage of candidates for the seven seats which must be filled to elect a new City Council Only candidate who has qualified and announced for the forthcoming election is incumbent Councilman Joe As of riday afternoon six citizens had obtained the necessary qualifying petitions from the Election Commission office including three of the present Council members and three other prospective candidates We encourage others to come forward as candidates in this important election We would like to see several capable persons both men and women show their interest and concern in the affairs of Elizabethton by offering themselve as public servants We hope also that the in cumbents will again make themselves available for further service There are numerous intelligent honest and well qualified citizens who could ably perform the duties of a Council member and could offer valuable business and professional experiengee in governing the City of Elizabethton? Perhaps there are those who would be willing to serve as City officials butare fearful of being defeated at the polls There is no disgrace in an election defeat There must be losers as well as winners Basic to the democratic process is the choice of the voters Without a number of qualified candidates there can be no choice by the majority When this occurs there arises the opportunity for corruption unresponsive leadership and totalitarian government We ure all unselfish citizens who have sincere motives and wish to play a contributing role in the future of this to make themselves available by becomng a candidate for City Council Construction on State Route 137 from State Route 34 to ln September Summers Taylor Inc of Elizabethton is' Unaka Street in Johnson City is expected to be completed rnnstnirting the project Work is expected to be finished next January on the in dnstrial access rnad from State Route 34 to Oakland Avenue in Johnson City McDowell Purcell was awarded a Con tract for this project on Dec 17 1971 tl Construction on State Route 137 from' Market Street to 'Unaka Street in Johnson City is expected to be finished in early 1975 A contract for constructing this half mile project was awarded April 27 to King Smith Inc of Mem VICTIM BROUGHT TO SHORE Carter County Rescue Squad members stand around the body of Kenneth McCloud just after he was brought from the waters of Watauga Lake after drowning yesterday afternoon in the Sep: tember 18 City Election Mrs Lane stated a member of the Board of Education it RAS filisratfo MRS LANE been my pri mary concern to see that the children of this community are afforded the very best (Continued cm Page 3 A) removed The program starts on August 1 1973 however the Chamber will take information on the cars at anytime This will be a 24 hour a day removal operation when the program begins: To 7 be a success all residents should participate if they know of the location of a junk car or Remember this is more than a beautification program a program to improve the health 7 and reduce the accident potential for the people of the City The junkers above were spotted 7 inside the city limits last week 7 f' nrifAtui nDArDAW Th a csh a triuohAthfnn in mnnAratinn with tho Carter Cm in tv ears for removal Information on cars mav be called into the Chamber of Commerce at 543 2122 fVljlUV AU IlVWlWUt 4HV vkMW Chamber of Commerce and Carter County Health Department is sponsoring a program for or 542 4200 The Chamber will relay the information to the proper authorities and the cars will be removing junk cars within the City limits Besides tne tact mat tnese nuixs are unsignuy tney are health and accident hazards Last drive was quite successful but there are still many cars to be removed this year City Ordinance 7 20 prohibits junk cars within the City limits and i the law will be enforced emphasized City Manager Bob Asbury During this junk car program the cars will be removed free of charge but after August 31 1973 removal will be at the expense of the property owner The City solicits the cooperation of all City residents in identifying junk MADISONVILLE Tenn (UPI) State officials have indicated work on Interstate 75 may be far enough along by loyd Stout Killed In Road Mishap loyd Kenneth Stout age 24 of Bulls Gap was killed in a train truck accident Saturday at Whitesburg Tenn Details of the ac cident were not available Mr Stout was a former resident of Rt 2 Johnson City having moved to Bulls Gap annroximatelv six months STOUT ago He was an employe of the Carolina Tire Recapping Co Whitesburg He was a veteran of Vietnam and at (continuea on Eage A) Mrs Barbara Lane ederal Grant for a Summer 7 Neighborhood Youth Corp Seeks Re election Work Program which will provide employment for 375 To School Board boys and giHs between the ages of 14 21 in Johnson Mrs Barbara Lane is a can Carter and Unicoi Counties didate for re election to the Bill Gardner Executive City Board of Education a Director Said Johnson County a In announcing she will seek would receive 100 job slots second term UIUCO1 UUUIliy aw diuidi auu Carter County 175 slots Don Marshall Manpower Director said the program would begin on July 23 and 'continue through August 31 Participants will work for Public and Private Non Profit Agencies for 40 hours each week at an hourly rate of $160 According to Marshall all persons interested in working this program should (Continued on Page A) I I Hill I' SUNDAY 25 CENTS i 4 lr 1 SV?
