Nov. 19. 1953 Mexiqan Driver Spurts Away On Big Road Race TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico A green Chrysler piloted by Mexican driver rode away from the starting line in early morning darkness today to launch the fourth Pan-American road race. In the starting position because he was the firit to enter the jnile border-to-border race was Fernando Ra2O Macial.

Joe Thome, in No. 2 position in one of bii own specials, was the first foreigner to start. Another American, Owen Gray, Lubbock, Texas, was the third starter, in another Chrysler. Then came Phil Hill, Santa Monica, in the firit European car, an Italian Farrari. The first European driver was Luis Rosier, France, in a Talbot.

A record total of 199 cars have been entered in the five-day classic. The Lancaw generally were picked as the cars to beat in the big sports car class, one of four separate claisei. There are separate prizes, totaling some $101,000 lor each of the classes. Of the U.S. cars, only Chrysler, is making a determined challenge to the European cars in the big sports class.

Five Chryslers wit the new experimental 280 hors power engine, are running agains the and the Ferraris. Lincoln, which finished one-two three-four in the stock car clas last year, is again the favorite in its class of the 58 cars in thi class, 23 are Lincolns.
