Schirra, 45, and navigator Donn Eisele, 38, and systems engineer Walter Schirra, 45, braced themselves for the intense pain of rising pressure on their cold stuffed heads. They were virtually assured their 163. orbit, 4.5 million mile flight would clear the way for Apollo 8 to fly around the moon. Schirra triggered the ship's main rocket engine at 6:42 a.m., EDT as Apollo 7 made its final sweep over Hawaii. The 11 second blast, fired as the rocket nozzle pointed up toward the direction of travel, gave the slamming braking power needed to start Apollo 7's drive back into earth's thick atmosphere.

"The results look very good," mission control reported after the retro fire blast. The blast took place at an altitude of 207 miles, about 500 miles east of Hawaii. Rocket Pulls Away Moments later, a string of explosive charges ripped Apollo's cabin away from its supporting rocket module. The service module's control rockets fired at the same time to pull it away from the astronauts. The cone shaped spacecraft weighing about 12,000 pounds after separation from the service module, flipped over and began its glide back to earth with i its blunt heat shield end pointing in the direction of flight.

"Everything came out hunky dory," Cunningham reported after Apollo 7 hurtled away from its service module. The astronauts were strapped upside down in their spacecraft so the ship would have enough "lift" to glide smoothly into the atmosphere. As the atmosphere began to thicken and the astronauts began to feel the pull of earth's gravity for the first time since their Oct. 11 launch from Cape Kennedy, the heat shield of Apollo 7 began to glow. Streams of fire trailed off its upper edge.

Gravity Increases Gradually the gravity increased with the screaming dive of Apollo 7 until the crew weighed three times their normal earth weight. Pressure rose from! pounds per square inch to nearly 15. "We're flying a pink cloud," reported Schirra as the friction of the air created a fireball around the ship. At 6:59 a.m., Apollo 7 went into the radio blackout created by the envelope of electrically charged gases around the ship. NO LAY AWAY GIFT ITEMS NOW FOR CHRISTMAS!
