Outward Bound is a nonprofit organization that uses challenging physical activities including rock-climbing, sailing and rafting to promote self-confidence and Associated Press Raymond VanderLaan, a political figure in Ottawa County for 40 years, died Friday after open heart surgery. He was 74. Mr.

VanderLaan, of Hudsonville, had had the quadruple-bypass at But-terworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died. He was elected in January to his third term as chairman of the county Board of Commissioners. Mr. VanderLaan, a funeral director, was elected Hudsonville village president in 1951. He served until 1957 when the town became a city and he became the Hudsonville representative on the County Board of Supervisors, which later was named the Board of Commissioners.

He served until his death. "He enjoyed politics as a sideline," said his son, Fred VanderLaan. "He talked to us about it and he was always informing us about what was going on." Mr. VanderLaan also is survived by his wife, Jeanne; son, Philip; daughter, Barbara Klunder; a sister, and five grandchildren. Services will held at 11 a.m.

Kerner of Shelby Township owned Kerner Construction, which succeeded H. Kerner Son, found- ed by Mr. Kerner's father in 1900. The Utica native was an Army veteran of World War II, winning three Bronze Stars. He was a charter member of the Utica Lions.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters Denise Pitzen and Gerilyn Kerner; a brother, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 45160 Van Dyke, Utica, preceded by a 10 a.m. visitation at the church. Burial will be in Utica Cemetery.

Patricia Holbrook, a Bioomfieid Hills mother and homemaker, died Wednesday of a blood clot in the brain at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was 66. Mrs. Holbrook, born Patricia Haley in Toledo, Ohio, was a 1947 graduate of the University of Michigan. She was a member of the Farm and Garden Club of Birmingham and North Congregational Church of Southfield.
