On Tuesday morning, neither Dave Bergman nor Keith Kimberlin knew what a nice story they would combine for in the afternoon. Bergman could expect to get in Tuesday afternoon's game at first base after Cecil Fielder got two or three at-bats. Kimberlin, a shortstop, was getting ready for another day in the minor- Sun. Hon. He paused. "Those were good plays for a young kid," he added. This was a reprise of Jack Morris' no-hitter in Chicago, when Bergman made a couple of great plays to save hits in the final inning. That was early April of 1984, in the Tigers' 9-0 start, in Bergman's first regular-season week with the club. Sparky Anderson remembers the Tigers wanted left-handed hitter Greg Gross in the Hernandez deal.

The Phils wouldn't include him. So the Phils acquired Bergman from the Giants and put him in the trade. That was seven years ago. The only players who have been with the Tigers longer than Bergman are Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Chet Lemon and Dan Petry (who left and came back). "I'd like to play until I'm 40 absolutely," Bergman said.

"I don't feel old. I can still move around out there." He's played 12 full years in the big leagues without being an everyday player. He was asked what in his career he's proudest of. "That I've been a believer in the team concept, and that I'll try to do my part in whatever it takes a team to win," Bergman said. "I want people to say that I was a good, solid major-league player, and that they'll remember I tried to do whatever I could to help the ballclub win." Kimberlin was impressed by Bergman's two plays Tuesday.

"Beautiful," he called them. "How old is he?" Kimberlin asked. Thirty-seven. "Is he? And out on that Astroturf today? He doesn't look like he's past 30." Keith Kimberlin City. TODAY'S GAMES Fielder was absent Tuesday with Detroit Vs.

Kimberlin had just found out he was going with the Tigers. He was on his way for their 10:05 bus when he spotted his dad. He told him he was going with the big-league club, but he didn't know where the game was. "I think it's in Dunedin," his dad said. "You'd better check," Keith said.

"I'm pretty sure it's Dunedin," his dad said. Dunedin, spring home of the Blue Jays, is west of Lakeland. Baseball City is east. So as Keith sat in the Tigers dorm late Tuesday afternoon saying "two knocks" in humble reply to a fellow minor leaguer who walked by and asked if he had any hits in the big game he still didn't know if his parents had witnessed it. Later Tuesday night, Kimberlin learned that his parents had checked the paper before leaving Lakeland, and had made it to the right game.

Kimberlin grew up in St. Louis, and he became a shortstop about the time Ozzie Smith joined the Cardinals. School was in session. "Everyone talks about how spectacular he is," Kimberlin said. "But I think a lot of his success comes from good fundamentals.

He knows how to position himself. I tried to pick up things watching him." Smith is 36, and Kimberlin says, "He's still great." Bergman is 37, and he's still amazing. And it's not just that he remains the Tigers untouchable utility player in an era when many clubs favor younger, inexpensive players for back-up positions. Bergman seems to be the same 30-year-old the Tigers acquired seven spring ago, in the Willie Hernandez deal with Philadelphia. He looks the same.

He hits the same line drives. He makes the same tremendous plays. In the third inning Tuesday, Kansas City's Brian McRae hit a grounder between first and second. The only way for the Tigers to get him was for Bergman to field the ball while running toward third base and then flip the ball, back-handed and backward, to Gullickson covering. It worked like a trapeze act.

The speedy McRae was out by a few inches. Kirk Gibson pulled a shot over first in the next inning. Bergman made a diving stop and flipped to Gullickson covering for the out. Gibson had to say something to Bergman before going back to the dugout. Frank Tanana has earned plenty in his 18-year career. Two hundred and seven wins. An ERA title and a strikeout title, back when he could throw hard. And the respect of the entire American League for the intelligent, crafty style he adopted after an arm injury.

But Tanana knows he didn't really earn his Opening Day start with the Tigers this season. "I had a brutal year," Tanana said, referring to his ERA of last season. "I didn't exactly get this position of Opening Day starter on merit. "I'm not putting a whole lot into the fact that I'm the Opening Day starter. I think I'd be a fool if I said anything else." Tanana went 9-8 last year with a career-high 5.31 ERA.

He spent time in the bullpen after going winless for xh months, a span in which he allowed more than one earned run per inning. The Opening Day start is typically given to the staff ace, or to a pitcher who performed well the year before. The Tigers don't have anyone who fits either description, since Jack Morris left for Minnesota. Morris started the last 11 openers for the Tigers. Tanana does appreciate the honor.

"It's the start of a new year; there's a packed house; it's a special day," he said Tuesday. "I'm thankful to be able to be the one this year to get the start." Tanana made 29 starts last season, after averaging 33 in his previous four full seasons in Detroit. LEMON ONLY BRUISED: Chet Lemon was not seriously injured when hit in the face by a throw in Tuesday's game against Kansas City. He suffered a bruise, and one side of his face was swollen, but manager Sparky Anderson said Lemon was fine. Lemon was not expected to be examined at a hospital.

Lemon was on third base when pitcher Steve Crawford threw a wild pitch in the seventh inning. Lemon broke for home as catcher Steve Macfarlane went after the ball. Macfarlane threw the ball to Crawford covering the plate, but the throw hit Lemon as he slid. Lemon was down for a few seconds, then walked off under his own power. Lulu Harwell Completes Therapy: Lulu Harwell, wife of Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell, has completed six weeks of radiation therapy in Lakeland for breast cancer.

"The doctors now have no immediate concerns about her health," Ernie Harwell said Tuesday. Harwell added, "We thank everyone for their prayers and concern. We've gotten a lot of cards. We're looking forward to going back home." BACK FOR A VISIT: Up to four former Tigers, plus Steve Howe, could be with the Yankees when they visit the Tigers for the season opener April 8. Howe, the University of Michigan product, is trying to make a comeback by winning a job in the Yankees bullpen.

As for the former Tigers: Matt Nokes will be one of the Yankees catchers. Chuck Cary will be in their starting rotation. Pat Sheridan could make the team as the fifth outfielder. And Jim Walewander, with a strong spring at shortstop, could be playing his way onto the team as a reserve. Walewander's chances were helped when starting shortstop Alvaro Espinoza suffered a broken finger.

Torey Lovullo, acquired for pitcher Mark Letter, appears to be headed for the Yankees' minor league system. 1-3 1 12-3 2 2 2 52-3 10 4 21-3 1 0 1 2 2 Smith (W 2-0) Pjiscios Belinda (S 2) 2 Telford Williamson Hlckey Milchel Phladeiphia LaPoint Ashby Scanlan Searage GHernandei McDowell McElrov Whitaker (2). Bergman played the whole game at first. He made two spectacular plays.

Bergman and Kimberlin each went 2-for-4. In the fourth inning, Bergman singled and Kimberlin doubled him in. It was one of those great afternoons possible only in spring training: the old pro teaming up with the prospect who's still a few years away from the majors. Kimberlin, 24, is in his third year of pro ball. He dresses in the minor-league clubhouse with dozens of other players, a cramped place of anonymity across the road from the major-league clubhouse.

While most big leaguers live in apartments around Lakeland, Kimberlin like those other minor leaguers sleeps in the Tigertown dorm, just across the grass from the minor-league clubhouse. Tigers manager Sparky Anderson has been raving about him this spring. Tuesday was the second time he's joined the Tigers for a major-league game, and the first time he has started. He said Anderson told him, "Nice job, son, nice job." a few times during Tuesday's game, and gave him a pat on the back. "Any time they ask you to go over to play with the major-league club, it's fun," Kimberlin said after the big day was over.

He said he's been asked to join the Tigers again for today's home game against Toronto. He can be sure his parents will see that one. They are in town for a few weeks to watch him. His dad, enthusiastic as usual, was out to watch the 10 Cuyler's star might rise and shine Charlie Vincent, from Page IE And for the next three summers he rode the buses in the South Atlantic League, the Florida State League and the Eastern League. And little by little he became a better hitter.

He hit .255 in 19 games with the Tigers at the end of last season, and he's hitting .414 this spring. But Anderson says he does not care if Cuyler even brings a bat back to Detroit with him. As usual, Anderson exaggerates. "If he don't hit anything, he still helps the ballclub," the Tigers' manager said after Tuesday's 3-0 victory over Kansas City. "The other guys are supposed to be paid to hit.

I like him because he can really go catch the ball in a big baseball park." Even now, though, Cuyler is often reminded of what might have been of a dual career. Of baseball and football, like Deion Sanders of the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons. "Deion Sanders told me, 'You should have been like me and played both But I'd rather spend my time in one sport and concentrate on that. So Tuesday, running in the same outfield where Bo Jackson ran so many times, Cuyler was thankful for his decision and for his good fortune. Baseball has been so physically taxing that he has to wonder if he could have endured football.

He injured his back trying to become a switch hitter, then a pitch broke his toe, he had to have surgery on the palm of his right hand and his first trial with the Tigers last fall ended when he sprained his right ankle. But he is healthy now, running around in this bright spring sunshine and trying to win a job, probably at the expense of Chet Lemon who has also had injury troubles. Lemon played only 104 games last summer, 127 the year before and, at 35, is near the end of the line. Only a vacant locker separate Cuyler and Lemon in the Tigers' clubhouse, but Cuyler said: "I don't see it Toronto abrhbl 4 12 2 Tatder lb 1010 Williams cf 3 0 10 While cf 3 010 MuHinlks dh Myers Gonzales 3b Russet dh Walling lb Franco 2b Scruggs II abrhbl 2 123 2 0 2 1 22 10 12 11 2 0 2 0 4 110 32 4 9 4 30 2 5 2 Totals Free Press Wire Reports NEW YORK Bo Jackson is injured, but he can still dash around the television dial. And he made the trip without losing his sense of humor and humility. When he was taken out of Tuesday's exhibition after six innings, he spent the next two innings signing autographs along the leftfield wall. He didn't turn down anyone, didn't leave until there were no more baseballs, no more baseball cards, no more scraps of paper passed over the wall.

"Usually I'll do that," he said later, saying it is not an ordeal to be recognized. "In the minor leagues people don't really know who you are. They just want a ball signed." 3 .387 3 3 .371 12 2 0 0 12 4 1 0 17 1 0 0 13 4 0 0 10 0 0 0 10 3 0 0 31 3 31 4 4410 3510 27 2 27 4 PITCHER I 08 9 ER HR BB 80 ERA Maacham 0 1 5 0 7 5 1 1 0 0 4 1.29 Tanana 3 0 4 4 15 10 3 3 1 3 4 1.80 Gibson 0 0 5 0 8 10 2 2 1 3 7 2.08 Gullcksn 2 0 4 4 17 19 5 5 0 10 5 2.65 Henneman 005 0 7733025 3.86 Searcy 0 2 3 0 11 12 6 5 0 5 11 4.09 Petry 0 2 4 4 13 16 9 6 2 3 9 4.16 Riti 0 0 3 0 4 2 2 2 0 4 0 4.50 Terrell 1 1 4 4 16 16 9 1 7 4 5.06 Gaktltr 0 14 0 lO'A 14 8 6 0 1 8 5.23 Aldred 0 0 4 0 12 12 7 7 2 5 10 5.25 Ceruttl 0 1 3 3 12 16 9 8 4 4 1 6.00 Leiter 0 1 4 0 8 14 10 8 0 5 4 9.00 Gleaton 0 2 4 0 5 10 10 10 2 4 1 18.00 Ramos 0 0 3 0 2 7 11 11 0 8 0 49.50 TOTALS 7 13 20 175 202 115 102 14 85 89 S3S 14 4 2 2 12 .389 19 0 0 9 388 1 370 49 9 4410 Clark, SF 2 J70 Noehrhtg, Bos Chamberlain, Phil 42 9 5 .368 14 4 0 1 Devereaux, Ball 38 7 17 5 0 1 16 2 1 0 11 3 0 1 12 2 1 1 May.
