Fedorov and Yzerman, along with Swedes Johan Garpenlov and Niklas Lidstrom, joined the Wings for practice Friday and will play this weekend. Absent were Russian defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov, whose knee is still bothering him, and forward Kevin Miller, who will join the team Monday after a six-week stint with Team USA, runner-up in the Canada Cup.

NOTEBOOK: The Wings play Philadelphia in an exhibition tonight at Orlando, Ra. The coaching staff is eager to see how Lidstrom and right wing Jim Cummin, a Dearborn native, do against NHL competition. The San Jose Sharks acquired right wing Wayn Prwley of Taylor from the Chicago Blackhawks for a 1993 third-round draft choice. Presley, 26, scored 15 goals and 19 assists in 71 games last season for the Blackhawks. Also, Link Gaetz of the Sharks pleaded innocent in Winona Mina, to charges that he discharged a gun inside the city limits and that he carried a pistol without a permit.

As for Detroit's search for a goalie to complement Tim Cheveldae, it's proceeding slowly. Murray hopes to talk this weekend with Philadelphia general manager Russ Farwell when the Wings play two games in Florida against the Flyers. Farwell has indicated a willingness to part with Ken Wregget for the right price. qu.ilitv iim'J ki.ttr. in the roatcdrral" oj 11 The waretiouse with everything for your house.

by Keith Gave Free Press Sports Wntrr With Grant Fuhr gone from Edmonton to Toronto in a big trade, there's one fewer goaltender available as the Red Wings continue their attempt to upgrade the most important position in hockey. But Wings general manager Bryan Murray isn't crying about missed opportunities. Just before he sealed the deal, Edmonton GM Glen Sather phoned Murray offering the Wings one last shot at the six-time All Star. Murray quickly said thanks, but no thanks. "What he wanted was unbelievable," Murray said.

"I wouldn't do it." Sather wanted Sergei Fedorov or Keith Primeau for the aging goalie Fuhr will be 29 next week. Fuhr was suspended for 60 games last season for admitted cocaine use. The Oilers got four young players and a draft pick for Fuhr, right wing Glenn Anderson, 30, and enforcer Craig Berube, 25. Edmonton got Vincent Dam-phousse, 23, the most valuable player in last season's All-Star game; defense-man Luke Richardson, 22; goaltender Peter Ing, 22; center Scott Thornton, 20, and a conditional first-round draft Martyn shys from fuss of induction BY STEVE CROWE Free Press Sports Writer Bruce Martyn, a voice of winter in Detroit since 1964, insists that his outward calm about entering the Hockey Hall of Fame should not be mistaken for ingratitude. "Not that it's not appreciated, but I've never been too big on this sort of thing. "It must just be my personality, because the limelight and I don't get along too well together." Martyn, 61, and his wife, Donna, will be accompanied by a support group of seven: Former radio partner Budd Lynch, a former Hewitt Award winner; Lynch's wife, Thelma; broadcast partner Paul Woods; former Wings center Alex Delvecchio, also a Hall of Famer; Wings TV announcer Dave Strader; Wings director of broadcast sales Tony Nagorsen; and Wings director of public relations Bill Jamieson. Players to be inducted are Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, Bob Pulford and Clint Smith.

Hewitt Award winners are selected by the NHL Broadcasters Association. Martyn, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, began his career at hometown WSOO-AM in 1950. In 1953, Martyn moved to Detroit and WCAR-AM, covering Michigan State football, doing weekday sportscasts and hosting a music program. After nine years, Martyn freelanced at WJR, assisting Van Patrick on Lions broadcasts.

Beginning with the 1964-65 season, Martyn whose "He sco-o-o-o-res!" soon became his trademark also served as Wings TV announcer through 1984-85. "Inwardly, I'm sure he's excited," said Lynch, Martyn's radio partner his first 12 seasons. "He's really what you would consider the best in the business today, no doubt." Lynch was inducted in 1985, the year Hewitt, a legendary Toronto announcer, died. "And I was the same way, wondering what the hell I was getting it for," Lynch said. "Bruce is very modest, almost bashful at times.

"But when that moment is upon him, he'll really feel it. It hits you when you're in your monkey suit, the program starts, and they call you up on center stage." When will Martyn be able to fully appreciate his newfound fame? "Tuesday," he said, "When the thing's all over and I can take my tuxedo back. I don't want to seem blase about this. But I'll be happy when it's over." Taipei defeats S.
