IN PERSUASIVE SPEAKING 14A-DEL RIO (TEXAS) NEWfrHERALD, Sunday, May 6,1973 Kathy Conn State Champ Kathy Conn, senior student at Del 'Rio High School took top honors Friday in Austin when she was named winner of the Class 4-A Persuasive speaking contest during University I nterscholastic League contests. Sharyland 2-A; Jan Kassahn, Bovina, A and Ann Reader, Runge, B. Boys winners, by conference included Ken Patterson Carrollton Tumeer, 4-A; Perry Hall, Muleshoe, 3-A; Scott Johnson, Dalhart, 2-A; Steve Penoglio, Nocona, A and Jerry Bradshaw, Eula Clyde, B. Miss Conn's title was the only state title won by any student in District 32 4-A during this year's competition. daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. John Conn, 1904 Ave. Kathy was the only student from. Del Rio competing in the state finals, and the first state champion in literary events in several years. Miss Conn is a member of the Drama Club and the National Honor Society.

After taking district honors in her specialty, Miss Conn swept the regional contests in Corpus Christ! April 15, being the only Del Rio student to place in UIL regional competition. Other persausive speaking state winners included Janie Castaneda, Corpus Christi, 3A; Mary Ann Finan, Mission Joe Martinez Named Club Boy of Month Thirteen-year-old Joe Martinez Saturday became the first youngster to win Del Rio Boys Club "Boy of the Month" honors. Miss Smith will be at the University of Texas in Austin to study math and Andrew will participate in the program at Baylor University in Waco, studying physics.

Mary, Ann Smith and Andrew Falls, both- junior students in Del Rio High School, will participate in the National Science Foundation pre-college student science training program. Miss Smith is the daughter of Willie Smith of 317 Long Drive. She will participate in the program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, one of 40 outstanding high school students who will study concepts of pure and applied mathematics from June 4 to July 7. Director there will be Dr.

Frank Palas of the department of mathematics at SMU. The subject area will be concepts of pure and applied mathematics, number theory, logic probability and set theory linear algebra. Falls' father is Col. Harry Falls Jr. of 9021 Arnold Blvd.

During their Boys State sessions, the Del Rio youths will participate in the organization of political parties, campaigns, elections and the enactment and enforcement of their own laws within a mythical state. "As one of the Legion's outstanding youth -training programs, Boys State affords these youngsters an opportunity to learn the functions of government," the two commanders here stated.

Boys Club Director Richard Trevino said Joe was selected because of his abilit to get along, his deep respect for the rights of others and his honesty. He was especially cited for his aggressive willingness to be of help and service. A Boy of the Month will be honored each month by the Del Rio Boys Club, which already has 500 members and is continuing to grow rapidly. The Boys Club was able to start serving the boys of the community when the City of Del Rio provided use of the old Central Fire Station and tossed in a $6,000 cash contribution. Since, a number of organizations, firms and individuals have joined to help keep the doors open.

Tuesday, the Pizza Hut will donate its entire day's proceeds toward this goal.
