Mr. Midener became the school's director in 1968, a post he held until he became president in 1977. He retired two years later with the title president emer by molly Abraham Free Press Staff Writer Sculptor Walter Midener, who fled his native Germany in 1938 and became a war hero in World War II in the U.S. Army, died Saturday in East Jordan, his summer home for many years. He had retired there after many years as director and then president of the Center for Creative Studies.

Mr. Midener who told an interviewer in the 70s that he left Germany "by mutual agreement with Adolf Hitler. I didn't like him and he didn't like me" was seriously wounded in Europe in 1945 and received a number of medals, including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. The Silver Star was presented to him in the same town where his grandfather had received the Iron Cross in the Franco-German War of 1870. In 1946, after teaching wood and stone carving at the Henry Street Settlement in New York City, Mr.

Midener came to Detroit to join the sculpture department at the Society of Arts and Crafts, which later merged with Detroit Community Music School and became CCS. The violinist and his orchestra performed for countless dances and weddings, including the Hungarian Festival at Yack Arena and the White Rose Ball, the debutante ball of the Hungarian community, for more than 50 years. Mr. Bodo, 83, who grew up in Delray, the Hungarian neighborhood in southwest Detroit, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at Oak-wood Hospital in Dearborn. "He really loved music, loved his violin and loved his family," said his daughter Deborah Bolton. "He worked hard all his life.

He was a perfectionist. I guess all violinists are." In addition to his orchestra, Mr. Bodo was concertmaster of the Allen Park Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, starting in 1955.
