6B DETROIT FREE PRESSFRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1998 ROAD CLOSINGS Anthanase Vekos: Tended bar, knew everjvnes name Eastbound 1-94 between Michigan Avenue and 1-96 will be closed and detoured from 8 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Monday. The eastbound 1-96 ramp to Lodge Freeway will be closed Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. The northbound and southbound Lodge Freeway Wayne County line to the 1-275 interchange.

Monroe Wayne Counties Northbound 1-275 is closed from Telegraph to 1-94. Traffic is detoured to northbound Telegraph. Southbound 1-275 traffic is detoured to the northbound roadway from Northline Road to Newburgh Road, with Eureka ramps closed. Construction is scheduled to be completed Oct. 15.

Livingston County Eastbound 1-96 is reduced to one lane at times from Howell to U.S.-23. There are shoulder closures on eastbound and westbound 1-96 under Spencer Road. Westbound 1-96 is reduced to one lane between Chilson Road and M-59 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. There are intermittent lane closures on 1-96 between U.S.-23 and Kent Lake Road.

U.S.-23 southbound is reduced to one lane from Silver Lake Road to M-14, between 9 p.m.-6 a.m. Toledo Northbound and southbound 1-75 are reduced to one lane between 1-475 and I- 280. Oakland County On 1-96, there are intermittent lane closures in each direction at the South Hill Road bridge. Eastbound 1-96 exit ramp to Beck Road is closed with traffic detoured to Wixom Road. The right lanes of northbound Northwestern Highway are closed at Telegraph. The ramp from northbound Telegraph to northbound Northwestern and westbound 1-696 is closed until late October. Southbound Lodge Freeway closed at Southfield Freeway from 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

M-59 is closed west of southbound Wide Track (downtown Pontiac), for railroad bridge building. Westbound M-59 ramp to Crooks will be closed Saturday from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Northbound 1-75 at Rochester Road will be closed from midnight tonight until 4 p.m. Saturday. Northbound Rochester Road ramp to northbound 1-75 will also be closed.

Oakland and Livingston counties There are intermittent lane closures on 1-96 in each direction between Novi Road and U.S.-23. Washtenaw County Eastbound M-14 is reduced to one lane from Ford Road to Beck Road. There are intermittent lane closures in both directions on U.S.-23 between 1-94 and Plymouth Road. Monroe County Northbound and southbound 1-75 will have daytime lane closures from the south northbound 1-75 is closed except from 2-7 p.m. weekdays; detour is posted.

There are intermittent lane closures on 1-75 both ways at State Fair and Junction. The northbound and southbound 1-75 ramps to eastbound 1-94 are closed. The left lane of northbound 1-75 is closed between Clay and 6 Mile. 1-75 Service Drive (near 8 Mile Road) reduced to one lane in both directions, 5 including southbound on-ramp. These ramps are closed: On eastbound 1-94, the Harper ramp between Cadieux and Outer Drive-Chalmers; on westbound 1-94, northbound and southbound 1-75 ramps. Eastbound and westbound 1-94 are reduced to two lanes between East Grand Boulevard and Woodward. Eastbound 1-96 ramp to the Lodge Freeway will be closed Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Macomb County The two left lanes of east and westbound 1-94 between Little Mack and 12 Mile are closed. The ramp from westbound Metro Parkway to westbound 1-94 will be closed periodically.

The right lane of eastbound 1-94 near Metro Parkway and the ramp from eastbound 1-94 to Metro Parkway are closed. The exit ramp from eastbound 1-94 to M-59 is closed until September. The right lane of westbound 1-94 is closed at M-59. Death ramps to southbound 1-75 and westbound 1-96 as well as the northbound 1-75 ramp to the Lodge Freeway will be closed Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wayne County The southbound 1-275 exit and entrance ramps at Will Carleton Road are closed. 1-275 is reduced to two lanes in each direction between M-14 and Carleton-S. Rockwood Road. The left lanes of 1-275 are closed in each direction at Will Carleton, South Huron and Sibley roads. The ramp from northbound 1-275 to eastbound Grand River Avenue is closed; a detour is posted.

1-275 between M-14 and Cherry Hill is reduced to two lanes in each direction. There are intermittent lane closures on 8 Mile in both directions between Greenfield and 1-94. Detroit The two right lanes of northbound 1-75 are closed from Warren to Meade. One right lane is closed from 2-7 p.m. weekdays.

The eastbound 1-94 ramp to became a bartender at Eddie Paul's supper club in Detroit. He opened up his own restaurant, but it quickly closed. In 1982, he became the bartender at 220 Restaurant. Over the years, he was relied upon for more than just mixing and pouring drinks. "Everybody here has been kind of raised by him," Tillman said.

"He was everybody's pop almost. He was older than most of us and was the kind of man you went to when you had problems." "He knew how to handle employees, customers, and if somebody got out of hand, he knew how to deal with it." Outside of work, Mr. Vekos would often cook special Greek dishes and tend to his vegetable garden. He often brought tomatoes to work, and his wife would can the rest. This spring, Mr.

Vekos spent several weeks in Greece with his family and visited his hometown for the first time in 24 years. Survivors are his wife, Gloria; daughters Kathy Konon and Niki, and two sisters. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. today at S.K. Schultz Funeral Home, 21705 Gratiot in Eastpointe.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Phanourios, 16414 Fourteen Mile in Fraser. BY NlRAJ WARIKOO Krve Pn-ss Staff Write Anthanase (Tommy) Vekos, the bartender who always knew your name and what you drank even if you stopped in only twice a year, died Wednesday of complications from a stroke at St. John Hospital in Detroit.

The St. Clair Shores resident was 65. Short and stocky, Mr. Vekos was the man behind the bar for almost 16 years at 220 Restaurant in Birmingham. Enter the res Anthanase Vekos taurant and his spot was right in front dubbed Tommy's Corner.

"He was an old-fashioned bartend-er, somebody you could talk to," said Frank Tillman, general manager at the restaurant "He would pour you a drink and lend you an ear when you needed to talk." He was born in Kalamata, Greece, and hid out in the mountains during World War II with his family. He briefly was a police officer in Greece and immigrated to Montreal when he was 25. He later moved to Windsor and then to Detroit in 1967, when he Lillie Alvarez Former tax preparer Lillie R. Alvarez, 47, a former tax preparer who dealt with her illnesses with smiles and laughter, died Monday of complications from leukemia at her Detroit home. At the age of 8, the former Lillie Wilson was di agnosed with glandular tuberculosis and had to be separated from her family for 10 months.

She later attended Detroit public schools, married, and graduated from Highland Park High. Lillie Alvarez After moving to Sacramento, she attended American River College. She graduated from a beauty college in Sacramento. She then worked for about five years as a tax preparer for the state of California's franchise tax board. She remarried and moved back to Detroit in 1994 to be with her family.

In 1995, Mrs. Alvarez suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and was diagnosed with leukemia two years later. But through it all, she kept her sense of humor and her smile. Survivors include her husband, Mario Alvarez; sons Russell Deondre Deshane and Victor Trumane; mother, Mardell Meadows; father, Willie James Wilson; five grandchildren; one sister, and three brothers. ft Vf 27 Family hour will be noon to 1 p.m.

George Krikorian Detroit Edison representative George G. Krikorian, 77, who worked at his family dry-cleaning business and later became a customer representative with Detroit Edison, died Monday of an infection at Providence Hospital in Southfield. Mr.

Krikorian, a lifelong resident of Detroit, worked with his parents at Golden Gate Cleaners on Davison Avenue at Oakman Boulevard. In the mid-1960s, the land was bought to make way for an expressway. He then worked at Detroit Edison until retiring in 1986. He was born in Detroit and served in the U.S. Army during World War 11.

As a sergeant in the 156th Infantry, he was awarded four Bronze Stars and once was part of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's personal honor guard. A quiet, unassuming man, Mr. Krikorian enjoyed observing construction projects.

He would travel around Detroit to note how new buildings changed the landscape. He also tinkered with model cars and airplanes, and enjoyed time with his family. Survivors are cousins Robert Kal-jian and Lillian Torigian. Funeral services were held Thursday. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Detroit.

He left Pittsburgh again for a talk show in Florida, returning to KDKA in 1986. He retired in 1989. Otto Wichterle Inventor of soft contact lens PRAGUE, Czech Republic Otto Wichterle, 84, a Czech researcher who invented the soft contact lens in 1956, died Tuesday. Mr. Wichterle fell from favor in then-communist Czechoslovakia when he joined antigovernment protesters during the failed reform attempt of 1968.
