12A DETROIT FREE PRESSSATURDAY. JANUARY 30. DETROIT DATELINE Council OKs casino plan, despite advice fayette Community Action Council, said after Friday's vote; "This is disrupting our community." Johnston said she and other opponents of the location will consider suing to halt construction. The city has yet to condemn land in the 57-acre casino site, which could be challenged by property owners. Licenses also must be approved by the Michigan Casino Gaming Board, a process that is expected to start this spring.

The casino complex is expected to open in 2002. Darci McConnell can be reached at 1-313-222-6678 or by E-mail at mconnellfreepress. com the common council approved what we've been fighting for for the last 10 years," Greektown casino proprietor Ted Gatzaros said. "It creates some level of competition that you find with any major convention city." The council rejected a recommendation by its City Planning Commission to vole down the plan. In a Jan.

21 report, the commission raised concerns about traffic congestion, pollution and disruption to surrounding neighborhoods that could be caused by building a major access road to the casinos. "They'll be sorry, because we are a very viable community," Evelyn Johnston, president of the East I La BY DARCI MCCONNELL Five Press Slal Writer A gambling complex will rise on the east riverfront of Detroit. The City Council approved the previously announced plan Friday in a 6-3 vote that will permit the Greek-town, AtwaterCircus Circus and MGM Grand groups to build casinos near the river. "We think it's great," said Jack Barthwell III, director of public relations for the Atwater casino group. "We think the riverview site is an ideal site, and we look forward to the work getting started." Council members Maryann Ma-haffey, Nicholas Hood III and Brenda Scott voted against the plan.

All have raised concerns about the location, just upstream from the Renaissance Center. "For this neighborhood to be stable and then have it disrupted is disgraceful," Scott said. "Clearly that's the wrong site for the casinos." The vote came after an agreement between the casino developers and the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. on how much it will cost to ready the land for the project less than the $250-million limit developers set as a condition for the deal. The developers will reimburse the city for casino-related costs.
