football aficionados pay homage to the football meccas of Texas Brownwood Breckenridge Odessa Abilene and Temple are usually mentioned Another town that could join this elite group if success continues as consistently as it has during the Toby York era is Cameron Cameron is a community more or less untouched by the modem times a throwback to the 40s and 50s It is a farming community which evolves around its children and their school activities Cameron always has been a consis tent winner just that since York took over in 1 981 the Yoemen are even more consistent winners The Yoemen will try to extend winning ways Saturday in Moorhead Stadium at 7:30 in the regional Class 3A playoffs against Kirbyville Iri five seasons he already has produced 52 victories and one state championship He is consi dered by his pieers one of the bright est young coaches in the state But his coaching abilities alone did not lift Cameron to its present status What then are the reasons for the success? It all begins at ground level with a community that loves the game wants to see its team and children successful and backs the program to the hilt community pride In the summer we talk about foot ball and mark our calendars for the first day of two a day fall practices said Maxie Shuemate a Cameron In dependent School District employee The people of Cameron put their energies into supporting the Yoemen George Hollas an insurance man who played back in 1945 47 cited a story from one of the assistants which points out the importance of football and winning in Cameron Dunn is defensive Hollas said said when he was being hired by York he was told if they win be run off Dunn said those were his kind of Dunn got the job and York got a good defensive coordinator always has been a good football Hollas said won a district title since 1936 when I was playing and we won in 1946 We had tremendous support then I think maybe it started after World War II In the last 40 years maybe had two losing seasons just had a good It is a program which has been gently handed from one generation to another to nurture with care Several fans credited their success to having good coaches who showed interest in their children Coaches mentioned were Paul Smith Ed Cauley George Kirk Leo Jackson and now York Smith may have been the Shuemate said had something to do with the program as did Cauley who came in gung ho in 1971 and Kirk All three were from good programs in Killeen and Tem ple and they brought it with them was the way they treated the boys and the community just fol lowed through They were special people do look forward to football season because there is little else to do" insurance man orrest Sapp said there is good coop eration between the administration band football team and the town I think a lot of it has to do with winning Sapp came to Cameron in 1 954 as a junior high coach under Jackson and stayed had three sons Randy Ricky and Alan play ball and gradu ate from Cameron Randy is an assis tant coach at Cameron and Alan an assistant at Glen Rose All agree that there might be some thing a little extra special about York is a little different chemis try between York and the Sapp said seems to be able to get the most out of them The boys pay the price but so do the coaches Those guys stay up at that field house and work all Shuemate and brother Bertie agreed with that statement first summer York came never seen a coach work so hard in my Maxie said put things in order first Organization was the key Bertie said leaves nothing to chance His teams are prepared for every Hollas said pride sacrifice and attitude are the keys which help York unlock the door to success knows what Hollassaid a hard worker but he surrounds himself with good people never really has had the great athletes Maybe why they get along together so well In 1981 when we won state we had a great kid named reddy Capers An all stater named Oscar Riggins moved in and maybe had more ability I think Capers did more for the team that year by doing what he could to help Cameron win that kind of attitude which has helped Cameron.
