SATURDAY, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, FREE PRESS 11A Josephine Faddol: Detroit's Arabic voice for 31 years DAN SHINE Free Press Staff Writer Josephine Faddol was born in Detroit to Lebanese parents but was not taught Arabic. She learned the language so- she and her husband, Joseph, could cohost radio show featuring Middle da Eastern 1 music and news. From 1950 to 1981, Mrs. Faddol was the voice of "Middle East Melodies" on several Detroit radio stations. The show also had two stints on WXON-TV (Channel 20) in the 1970s that Josephine featured belly Faddol dancers and guests.

On Friday, the voice many Detroiters in the Arabic community grew up with was silenced. Mrs. Faddol died at her Oak Park home after suffering for 10 years with colon cancer. She was 79. While producing and hosting the show with her husband, who died in 1961, Mrs.

Faddol also ran a drycleaning business in Detroit and later a wholesale bowling-shirt distributor- ship. But the radio show was her first love. Mrs. Faddol's show was nonpolitical; it had music, educational information and notices of cultural events. Her son and daughter sang the commercial jingles on the show.

Her son also wrote the news updates. To promote the show, Mrs. Faddol held annual dinners that featured Middle Eastern entertainers and dance troupes. "People all over metro Detroit attended," said Diane Faddol, Mrs. Faddol's daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Faddol was friendly with ambassadors of Middle Eastern countries and brought over several entertainers for their first visit to the United States. She is survived by her daughter, Joanie; son, Joel, and four grandchildren. Visitation will be p.m. today at Our Lady of Redemption Melkite Church, 8525 Cole, Warren.

A funeral service will follow at the church. A memorial mass will be at noon Sunday at St. Maron Cathedral, 11466 Kercheval in Detroit. The body will be cremated. Dan Shine can be reached at 1-313-223-4554 or by E-mail at Bette Wright: An actress, teacher and real estate agent BY DAN SHINE Free Press Staff Writer Bette Wright, who had enough energy and interesting careers for several people, died Wednesday of complications from a brain aneurysm.

She was 82. Mrs. Wright, a Denby High School and Wayne State University graduate, was a cast member of "The Lone Ranger," "Green Hornet" and "Call of the Yukon" radio shows in the 1940s as well as the serials "Road of Life" and "Ma Perkins," among others. She starred in several local theater productions, including "The Bickersons" with Sonny Eliot. Mrs.

Wright and Eliot also collaborated on the show "Beat the Band." A Grosse Pointe Farms resident, she was active in the Grosse Pointe Theatre and acted in several industrial and educational films for auto companies. In the 1950s, she did the weather on WJBK-TV (Channel 2) and was known as "Miss Fairweather." In 1962, she hosted a radio program called "Treasured Words" that provided inspiration for listeners. Mrs. Wright also served as a substitute teacher in Detroit-area school districts. For the past 26 years she was a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker Real Estate Co.

in Grosse Pointe Farms. She volunteered at WXYZ TV (Channel 7) answering phones for the station's "Call for Action" segment for many years. In 1997, Mrs. Wright wrote to the Free Press to nominate the Detroit area's worst pothole and paraphrased Shakespeare while doing it. "Gosh, she was just amazing, just fascinating," said her daughter, Wendy Bradley.

"At 82 she had more energy than I do at age 41 and a lot more energy than most people I know." Besides her daughter, Mrs. Wright is survived by sons Randy and Robin and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Philomena Catholic Church, 4351 Marseilles in Detroit.

Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Dan Shine can be reached at 1- 313-223-4554 or by E-mail NATIONAL FOREIGN DEATHS Teruo Kawamoto the 1960s.
