Martin Crane's gloriously ratty recliner on "Frasier" is television's most hilariously inappropriate piece of furniture, the quintessential interior decorator's nightmare. There it sits in the middle of style-conscious Frasier Crane's sleek Seattle apartment every week, occupying a happily vulgar bit of space, no doubt an irritating reminder to the effete, upscale Crane siblings of their downscale roots. Pop was a cop, after all. Blue collar, not blue blood. "We all love sitting in that chair.

Nobody cares. We want it to get used and beat up," says Roy Christopher, the show's production designer and the man responsible for overseeing the look of the memorable sitcom apartment The decor of Frasier's home is generally known as "mid-century contemporary," says Christopher. But Martin's chair in regurgitation green, mustard yellow, beige and rust brown stripes is more retro kitsch. Most of the "Frasier" apartment set, of course, mirrors Frasier Crane's upwardly mobile tastes. "It comes from who those people are, where they come from," says Christopher.

"The set usually reflects the character." But finding the signature hunk of easy chair junk that echoed Martin Crane's own personality wasn't a snap. An assistant "brought in lots of Barcaloungers, but none were really rotten1 enough," says Christopher, a production design veteran who started out on "Welcome Back Kotter" and "Chico and the Man" before eventually moving on to "Murphy Brown" and "Frasier." Not until the "Frasier" set decorators located a used recliner, then re-upholstered and abused it'did the proper furniture alchemy occur, says Christopher. They sandpapered the chair to age it, then ripped it a little, then added a soupcon of duct tape. Perfecto! "I'd love to own Martin's Barca-lounger." muses Christopher. "That's going to be worth lots of money some day." Bet the Smithsonian would even love to repo that recliner for pop-culture posterity.

"It became a little more difficult to look at Frasier when he was obviously suffering," adds Grammer. "I didn't count on how much people cared about that." Frasier and the rest of his colleagues at KACL radio were laid off when the radio station switched to an all-salsa format at the end of last season.

But after "Frasier" became the first TV show in history comedy or drama to win five Emmy Awards as outstanding series in September, the NBC sitcom's sixth season got off to a stumbling start as "Frasier" moped in the unemployment line for nine straight episodes. "When's he going back to That's what I heard from people," says Grammer. "Now that Frasier's back at work, there's a little more bounce in his step. So it's funnier to watch him fail in every other aspect of his life." But even when Frasier was out of work and out of sorts, hanging around home all the time, the style of the comedy never changed. "A big part of it is playing up to the audience," says Grammer.
